Maybe it's for the best. Episode 9 might have got on your nerves, as it did mine. It was more of the same: You're not good enough to be a pilot with us! Geez, and to think I'm probably gonna stick this out to the end.
I've not heard much about the visual novel, so I can't really say how it compares. The anime, however, is kind of scattershot. It wants to be awesome, but some dumb elements pull it another way too often, I think.
How far did you make it? I can understand how it could get boring, which is kind of a shame given how engaging the two opening eps were. From there, however, it just lost its way.

What I usually do whenever I pick some shows from the newest season I quite simple: I read the blurb, and decide from there! I don't really do in-depth research before picking something up, so that leaves me pretty wide open in terms of anime. Sometimes it's a hit, sometimes it's a spectacular miss!

Huh, I'm surprised the Muv-Luv anime is apparently pretty bad when the Muv-Luv Alternative visual novel is supposed to be one of the best out there. Maybe it deviates far from the source material...?
I just did a quick search on each of the titles, and sure enough, as you said, you picked a couple, uh, trashy ones! Haha But you live and learn sometimes by trial and error. :P
