I knew about Akebono for a while now, and I first read about this dude about a year or so ago. The fact he's European is kinda cool. Akebono was an islander, so he was already lumped into the Oceanic ethnic grouping. *shrugs* Thinking about the whole Eastern Europe scene makes me giggle though, for some odd reason.
This guy isn't the first gaijin sumo champion. If you're curious, Wiki' a Hawaiian guy named Akebono - probably wasn't the first gaijin sumo wrestler and maybe not the first champion, but he was the first to reach Yokozuna.
Aside from that, I need to watch more sumo wrestling - it's pretty cool.
