Maybe it's like ramen or something... they tell you to cook it one way on the package, but you just cook it differently because it tastes better your way? Something like that, I guess. I mean, I cook my ramen in the microwave and add things afterward like egg, frozen corn, and spices.
Yeah, Calrose is good. I mean, to me, long grain is okay, but maybe I like Calrose more because it's closer to the Japanese variety of rice? Anyways, it's good with rice vinegar and makes great inari and rice balls :D (My first attempt at a riceball had salmon spread inside... not bad, but I think I forgot the salt for the rice XD And there wasn't any nori on it.)
Ah, I see~ My and my little brother followed the instructions exactly haha~~ I bet it did taste better when the cubes were in longer~! -3-
Ah, Calrose~ We have that at home too (only a little left after how many years O.o) xDDD, but we also eat in on special occasions and such~ ^^' Long grain is what we usually eat most of the time~

I've used the Golden Curry mix once before (mild flavor)... not bad, from what I remember, but we accidentally put the blocks in the pot too early and it ended up cooking with the other ingredients for about 50 minutes instead of ten... though maybe that helped meld the flavor a bit? :/ I'd like to make curry again, but I don't think my mom or brother would eat it... so that's only two for curry if my dad decides to eat some.
But your curry at least looks good, despite what you said about the taste; I would've used Calrose for the rice, but that's just me.
