    Good first post, this is a neat topic!
    I've never thought of using borders like that, but i understand! I should try it sometime! I used to tend to mess up if I was working off of a rectangle ref pic but drawing on a different sized piece of paper >3< But now I usually have no problem. I don't mind unless I just don't have enough room xD I'll try this sometime though, thanks!!

    @toyotami kun:

    Well it helps me a lot with my works, its not necessary for all types of drawing though.

    @CelestialSushi:

    Well basically they dont have to use with all types of drawings like free hand sketches, but they do help make you aware of the space you have to work with, just like the example you gave relating to comics.

    When i draw i usually just use the page and if i don't use it all I crop it(not cutting just making a penciled border around my piece using a ruler)which is sort of like making borders, but only after my piece is mostly/completely done

    borders on paper? I don't really do that at all, the only time I use borders is when I do comic pages.
    To be honest I've never even heard of using borders at all, so this would be my first time hearing about it.
    I think I should consider it the next time I plan a drawing though, it sounds interesting.

    Can't say I use borders now for paper drawings, but they probably would've been helpful for at least one of my free sketch requests (Midna got a little too close to the bottom of the page ._.) Overall, though, I'm used to drawing without borders, and can generally keep my sketches in a good area on the paper, so I guess I prefer to go without them. But thinking about it now, I might want to give them a try sometime in the future, particularly for more difficult drawings.

    Comics, however, are another matter... but those borders are expected and come with the comic territory.

    I do have a program that automatically puts toggle-able borders on every page I make (Manga Studio Debut 3.0), but I use that program primarily for coloring, not drawing (it's too buggy to draw with >_<).
