Hm, there's quite a few silent letters in Japanese language. So, it's really no biggie that you left out the 'i'. It'll still sound like the colour blue when you read it. :D
Actually in the song of the intro of Evangelion you can see it's aoi even thou it's pronounced ao XD .Lol thats very funny,I actually always red it as anoneko,yeah sometimes I just blab the letter and just imagine what eva I want haha XD.
