That was interesting to read. ^_^ I don't recall seeing it at OB though. o_O That or it's been long enough that I forgot. Anyway, that was very well written and very sensible.
However, morality is not a legislative issue. We live in a fallen world, and no one can expect everyone to share his or her moral views.
*nods* Sometimes I get tired of the back and forth attempt to be right instead of people meeting in the middle. The sheer amount of good that could be done by setting aside that ego or desire to be right is staggering.
Anyway, an interesting read Sir Basement Kitteh. ^_^ {shamelessly borrows the Sir from Sabrina} >_>

I definitely agree on the statement that both McCain and Obama pandered to their audience. Politicians always do that in order to win, but ideally it should be that they state what they're truly for and let the voters decide for themselves based on that.
The abortion example is a good one, too. I remember reading the debate on OB concerning just that.
Frankly, I'd rather have a "compromise" on limiting abortion but not completely getting rid of it than leaving it as is.
And I could go on, but I'd just be repeating what was already illustrated through your friend's essay.
I liked that essay. It's quite thought-out and sensible. Being a moderate of an intellectual mind is difficult these days, due to the fighting and pandering and whatnot. It makes me sad, you know? If we all got along and make compromises and deals, so many more things would get done, but it's mostly "My way or the highway" when it comes to political procedures.
Incidentally, a few of you might remember me posting this on OB a while back. Normally I don't like to repeat myself like this, but I feel that the audience is markédly different between the two sites, so I wanted to give the essay some more exposure.

It really is a pity that people seem to have forgotten how to compromise or work together. Anyway, nice read.

Wow.
That was really amazing.
I'm not really all into politics myself, and I try to avoid bringing it up because of the verbal abuse I tend to get for it.
Compromising would be a big step for Americans. Whether or not we're capable of doing it though.. Yikes.
