And this isn't even a pageant. =P It's just supposed to be a Christmas Eve service, and every year it's gotten more pompous and production-happy and I think it's starting to move decidedly away from being actually about the event at all.

I used to participate in a church Christmas pageant way back when I was a kid. It was decent though, none of this sillery that you speak of.
