Suggestion for cutting costs: If you aren't doing something like this already, I'd run all PNG submissions through PNGOUT before they go up on the site. Many programs that can save images in PNG format don't compress them anywhere near the maximum amount possible (I'm looking at you, Photoshop), so this could save bandwidth by letting you serve smaller files.

While reading the beginning I almost thought that something bad went down, but like you said, sometimes it is for the best to just go and do it and later solve on how it went.
