I only have mainstream ones I can think of at the moment, so you've probably already seen them.

Durarara has a lot of tweests and secrets and anticipation and a cat and mouse feel, although there's no definite cat or mouse.

Monster is a classic mystery, so it has tweests. Just a little too "too long;didn't read."

Higurashi has people always trying to kill someone. So that's always fun.

Naruto is too easy to predict or its "oh no someone died. boo-hoo OMG IT WAS A CLONE WHAT A SURPRISE." :I That's just my take though. I'm just burnt out mehbee.

Lelouch is often compared to Light Yagami, so Code Geass is a shoe-in for strategy. Especially since he's a master chess-player. Vampire Knight is big on strategy too, but I suggest the manga over the anime if you want to get into that. Not being the animation isn't any good, simply because there's more story in the manga. My last suggestion would be Kuroshitsuji. For a little lord, Ciel is pretty smart, and very good at the games he plays.

Hmm...Baccanno!! I'd have to say is the only one I've watched with a lot of strategy. High School of the Dead has a bit of strategy sometimes too.

Yea it is a great series, and it has become one of my favorites to watch as of late. I highly recommend it to any anime fan over the age of 18 lol.

Everyone else posted the same old stuff, so i went out of my way to cycle through my anime collection and find a more diverse list of anime titles.

Ronin Warriors (Legendary Armor Samurai Troopers)
    Initital D
    Gatekeepers or (Gatekeepers 21)
    Yu Yu Hakusho
Lupin the 3rd (series or movies)
    Monster
    Slam Dunk
    Golgo 13

I thought it was ridiculous that nobody had listed Initial D, the whole series is basically about street racers strategizing against each other.

I also figured Lupin the 3rd would be listed as well, since Lupin and Zenigata are always playing the cat & mouse game in some way.

Hope my list will be helpful since it has a wide variety, and isnt overloaded with the same ol' recent anime that kids these days are raving about.

Nnn, see, the Claymore anime ends pretty craptacularly. It'd be a lot more enjoyable if he read the series instead, although I confess I have no idea where they are with that right now.

Spiral (though the manga is more in depth) is short, but very similar to the cat and mouse feel of Death Note.

Full Metal Panic - its more of an action/comedy, but the main character is amusingly anal and strategic.

Nabari no Ou is cool too, if you're into ninjas and 'special techniques.' I'm also going to assume you've watched Ninja Scroll already.

I watched an anime recently, One Outs, that is all about the main character using strategy and employing psychological warfare to win at baseball. It's pretty friggin' awesome.

I'd have to agree that you would definitely like both seasons of Code Geass if you haven't watched those yet, too.

    More anime:

Akagi (dude uses mahjong to kick everyone's ass)
Black Lagoon (every awesome '80s action flick put together)
Claymore (solid fantasy series with lots of fighting)
Darker than Black (lots of cool battles, although the ending is kinda crap)
Hunter x Hunter (hands down the best Shonen Jump-style anime I've seen)

    Definitely watch Ranma.

Also, Fairy Tail - imagine all the crazy magic techniques of your usual shounen fair, but with LESS FILLER. A fight is over within one episode, maybe two if it's a really big fight.

And then you get the beautiful epiphany moments like when there's a guy whose magic power is all about dispelling other people's magic. So the hero goes "if that's how it's gonna be, then fine!" and punches him. It's great.

Fairy Tail. Also, FUNi's doing a big push this spring. You'd best get your facts straight before the inevitable ad campaign starts.

You can take a look at that old manga called Gunnm (or Battle Angel Alita). Maybe also Deadman Wonderland? If you like ninjas and strategy, there is Nabari. Nothing to add, I think anything else I had in mind have already been said, like Bleach or Reborn.

Hope you'll find what you're looking for :)

You might like Ranma 1/2. A good part of the show is Ranma getting his ass kicked by someone and then figuring out how to kick their ass in return.

Not really. I noticed a trend in the most popular anime lately.

Lately, it's been about weird, hilarious, interesting plots. And what's the most popular anime? One Piece.

Yet a lot of popular anime are also of the action and thriller genre ~

To answer your question: I guess I could say that now Kateikyoushi Hitman REBORN! is an example that's really popular using that method right now in its manga lol it's just so interesting in its own way due to how the plot has changed.. hahahaha. |D Popular characters versus other popular characters right now, lolz.

But I think, in all, originality is just something that's the biggest factor with each anime. Each anime has its own "clique," such as Naruto features ninjas while Bleach features soul reapers. Soul eater features soul reapers with a twist that makes it separate from Bleach, while Full Metal Alchemist uses the concept of "alchemy" and the emotional impact of it on two main characters' lives as a plot success. Each anime has its own twist on certain things of our real world that people never really thought of, which makes each anime interesting!

But yeah, that's just my penny...

Naruto is just about power levels Vegeta would envy and Death Note is about being as "edgy" as possible.

Now if you want a strategy anime, Baccano! has many, many people all over the place with varied life outlooks, plans, and execution methods. Blood+ also has strategies all over the place too.
