@The Shirt: I disagree. Some 12 year olds really know some anime. (Or at least that is how it is at my school...) I have found that they know some that I don't (I know, sad...). Since they started watching early, they got a better head start.
Toonami is what started anime for a lot of the older people too. (It started in 1997 and ended in 2008. xD) Look at the lineup for the show. It includes a lot of classics.
Tell me about it. All the good characters lost to a bunch of 12 year old ignorant phonies that call themselves "anime watchers" when all they know is Toonami.
I just hope that everyone votes fairly by thinking about a characters back story and stuff rather than their looks or who's stronger. I honestly am saying that I wish Edward will win because I really do think he's been through a lot and has a good personality. Thank you to those who vote correctly!

I am no longer interested in the outcome. Seeing that all the characters that I thought were worthy of being best(Spike and Vash), the only one I can feel any reason to vote for now is Edward.
It depends on the ending, if everything is solved and the ending fits the anime well and is not rushed then I'm fine with it being short.
The problem with most long anime is that they repeat pretty much the same thing over and over again. Like pokémon, every season feels pretty much the same, they change around the heoïne and the pokemon but the plot stays the same.
25-episodes leaves me screaming for more- even if there is no more. But I understand what your talking about with fillers.
And I never really got into Bleach- I could only watch it till about 50th episode and I couldn't take anymore.
I think it's nice that some new faces made it so far in the competition. ^^; Please don't shoot me.
I've never watched anime of those old school battle anime like Naruto, Bleach, DBZ and Once piece. Not only because I don't get the chance, right now in my country bleach is airing with japanese audio and subs. I just don't like those kind of anime who drag on forever and have lots of fillers in them. I much prefer a 25-episode long Code Geass season.
Alright! L and Lulu actually made it. I figured L would, but I didn't expect Lelouch to make it through. I'm glad though. I like his backstory more than Naruto's.
Well, I'll be voting for them. Sorry Ed, I love you dearly, but I like L's character more overall.
And Sailor Moon still has all my hate. I'm not a Lelouch fangirl, but I'll vote for anything other than the sailor brat who is probably going to win this popularity contest.
Wow. This contest is really bringing out my Sailor hatred. I didn't realize how much I disliked that show until now.
Balance is key. A certain degree of maturity is appreciated, but I've found that more often than not those who are too young to understand adulthood tend to misinterpret "act like a grown-up" to mean "form a stubborn opinion and then belittle everyone who doesn't agree because you're smarter". Honestly, I prefer a little childishness to the sort of venom and bile that usually brings to the table.
It'd be one massive popularity contest, which is more vicious for real-life people than fictional ones because you risk actual people seeking out your life. Also, you'd get art snobs (like me) who would ruin everything.

It's funny, Sailor Moon is by far my favorite anime, but honestly I'd been rooting for Spike.
And I really would like to see an anime history-type feature. Think of all the old shows it would introduce to newer fans! And by drawing parallels to newer shows, it would introduce older fans to newer anime. Sort of if you love _____, then you'll like _____. I'm not the greatest writer, but I'd help out!
I did! xD But I had a hard time choosing between him and Kenshin o.e L vs. Ed will be another hard one. But after that one I'll be with the winner of that round all the way through. I love both L and Ed. It's unfair though because I haven't seen Code Geass or Sailor Moon. I think after L vs Ed I might skip the votes.

I will definitely give props to Sailor Moon for everything you've written about the show and for everything else Ive read about it..... And as the sister show of sorts to DBZ i can definitely grasp the humungous effect it has had on the anime community as a whole...
Why would anyone get mad at others opinions?, were all different people it can't be helped we think differently then others at times, it's just stupid to get mad at something the other person loves, not to mention mean, we should all just stick to rooting for our own choices and not get mad at people for there choices., That's just my opinion though ^-^.
Oh, and the level of influence Sailor Moon has isn't based solely on how many people were introduced to anime by the show.
If it were, I'd agree that Naruto is just as popular as Sailor Moon was.
Sailor Moon and Dragon Ball Z were the first anime shows to get enough fan base to push North American networks into airing more anime.
Sailor Moon has been translated and aired in more countries world-wide than the other shows on this list, meaning it exposed more fans internationally as well. It continues to air in other countries, just not in North America.
And in Japan, Sailor Moon redefined the magical girl genre, inspiring other female mangaka to write about fighting girls as something other than sexy side kicks or healers. Sailor Moon inspired a whole generation of mangaka, including CLAMP.
And that is why I laughed. Because Naruto, while well-loved and popular, just hasn't changed the anime world... yet. Maybe it will in the future, who knows?
I'm not angry at younger fans for not being exposed to the same anime I was exposed to. And no, I'm not anti-new anime, nor do I deny the popularity of shows like Naruto and Bleach. I have no doubt that those shows introduced anime to many new fans and I think that's great. (Said it before and I'll say it again...)
My point was and still is, when discussing 'the greatest anime character of all time,' the more you've watched, the more you know.
To further clarify, I'm copying part of my original post from the announcement of the Top 16.

I think your right and wrong... I agree that this shouldn't get outta hand. I may have been mad when Luffy was beat but it didn't stop me from voting.. With so many peoples favorite characters on the line, its understandable that people are gonna get mad and talk trash in the comment section, but thats ok.. right? as long as no one goes too far.(which hasn't happened as far as I can tell) No disrespect intended of course.. =) but fans will be fans!! oh and maybe its just me but I really don't think children should be acting like adults..thats just asking for trouble I mean hell I am an adult and i have a hard enough time acting like it.. =)

Really, while Ed is a better developed character than Goku, and Lelouch a better developed character than Ichigo, neither one deserves the title of greatest anime character ever, in my opinion. And I definitely think Spike is a better character than L.
Really the only one that went right in my eyes was Sailor Moon defeating Sesshomaru, but I don't see Sailor Moon as the greatest anime character ever either... -0-

I'm just going to say, I hope that it comes to Ed vs Sailor Moon. I know those characters equally so I can have an easier time voting.
What I think is that this "battle royal" really is getting to people...In my opinion I think It is just another way to pin us all agenst eachother...I think we shouldn't fight about this...I have always viewed theO as a very nice place, full of people who got along. About L xD I don't think people know what he's been through cause they haven't read the L Change The World book. I haven't either but I know it provides background info on L according to a few friends of mine who HAVE read it. So if you haven't read it then you really shouldn't be asking what he's been through, cause you don't really know.
I think Ed deserved to beat Goku. He's been through a lot more than Goku and y'know.. it kinda makes it seem like he's stronger. Goku's y'know.. all he's got is brute strength. He's normally in one mood and it makes him seem kinda.. idk. But it doesn't make him seem all that great.
Now Ed on the other hand, he's actually got a personality. He goes throug all this crap while trying to get his mom back and stuff and he ends up almost loosing his brother. In my opinion, Ed is kinda deep.
Now. Goku shouldn't win just because he's older. Yeah, he's cool. But not many people know about him anymore. People know about newer anime like Bleach, Naruto, and FMA. I'm not saying he's a BAD character, I'm just saying that Ed has more things revealed about him that make people like him more. I like Goku AND Ed, but Ed, in my opinion, is better. Partly because of all the stuff he's been through and how he blames himself and such. I know it might not sound like I know what I'm talking about, but I'm not good at describing and explaining things.
But yeah, Ed got my vote.
Hopefully none of you will go off and say something rude about this. It's immature and stupid. It's JUST a competition and if you want different results then do your own somewhere else like on facebook or something. That's what I did with the RP I'm hosting.

It's your opinion don't worry I don't get mad at people for that ^-^!, But I still believe that Goku should have got it if for any reason at all he paved the way for modern day anime and even though his anime is old people still watch it. I love Ed too but he hasn't had much time to impact the anime world like Goku did. I guess we just have different opinions on that and I hope you can respect mine like I do yours ^^.
Gah, exactly. I voted for Ed and Lelouch over Goku and Ichigo because I thought they deserved it for their -character depth-, not because of OMGHAWTNESS. Ed isn't even that attractive to me. He's too much the kid he is for most of the series.

Sailor moon was on TV before I was BORN. So, how are new fans supposed to get into anime through Sailor Moon if the show is no longer on? They do not. They start liking anime through other means. Naruto and Bleach. 10 years ago...I would totally go for Dragon Ball Z and Sailor Moon being the best.

I'm honestly very surprised that [even considering how much I like him] L is still here. It seems like an open wound for many of those commenting, but I'm merely surprised - even if I didn't vote for him. As far as Sailor Moon is concerned, I'm glad she made it this far but I really don't think she should win - although I'd be more than happy if she made it to the final two. Which brings me to Edward Elric. While he isn't close to being my favorite, nor do I think that he is the greatest character ever - he has got my vote.
I love that new shows inspire new fans, honestly I love some newer anime as well. It's the lack of awareness of the older anime that is frustrating.
For example, Naruto fans were upset that his character didn't make it to the final rounds. However Kishimoto Masashi admits that he created Naruto in Goku's image. Shouldn't those fans also be upset that Goku lost? After all, without Goku, there wouldn't be a Naruto.
@Adam and theOtaku staff - Can we create a feature that focuses on the history of anime? Just a few article ideas off the top of my head - the evolution of decent dubs, Censorship vs Sailor Moon: The Fight for Anime in North America, the influence of Dragon Ball Z on contemporary shonen, or articles that highlight series that created or redefined genres. What do you guys think?
Naruto is well-loved but nothing compares to the global influence of Sailor Moon. Seriously, go study your history of anime and give credit where it's due.
Spike Spiegel should have won clearly. At this time, it has to be Sailor Moon. There must be no arguements regarding this decision. LeLouche is too new of a character. Ed is good but not great. L is fantastic but should not have beaten Spike at all.
Simple logic people. Use it.
I believe at this rate, we'll have enough signatures to overturn at least three rulings.

I'm happy with the results. I personally do not think Sailor Moon deserves it. Just because she is old...Does not mean she should win the whole thing. I find her character weak....And the show...it was rather...dumb. The only thing on the list I think she really fits is influence.
And raise your hand if you did not know that Sailor Moon was anime when you watched it. All the other three? I did.
I think that all of these characters deserve to be where they are. (except Naruto...He should have won. I think he's had the same amount of influence as Sailor Moon...and his character is better than her)

wow...looking at these results, no wonder I'm feeling further and further detached from the entirety of anime fandom, Spike and Goku SHOULD have made it through.(and I actually, HATE DBZ, but even I know this ridiculous)
I'll put in a vote for Sailor Moon where I need to (another character I dislike but hold respect for the influence she has) and do my part to bump up the only deserving character left, but it's pretty obvious how this is gonna turn out.

I'm so disappointing with the anime community. In order to really understand great anime, you would have needed to have watched late 80's and 90's anime, there are too many anime babies voting. I really hope Sailor Moon wins this, she's really the only one that deserves this.
Interesting outcome. Definitely not who I was expecting to still be in this week. I'm incredibly disappointed that Spike did not make it out as the champion of his battle. So now I'll be cheering for either Lelouch or Ed.
I don't even have the words to say how very disappointed I am Goku and Spike didn't make it.
The only Character left with any real history behind them is Sailor Moon.

It's funny, Sailor Moon is by far my favorite anime, but honestly I'd been rooting for Spike.
And I really would like to see an anime history-type feature. Think of all the old shows it would introduce to newer fans! And by drawing parallels to newer shows, it would introduce older fans to newer anime. Sort of if you love _____, then you'll like _____. I'm not the greatest writer, but I'd help out!

Oh, and the level of influence Sailor Moon has isn't based solely on how many people were introduced to anime by the show.
If it were, I'd agree that Naruto is just as popular as Sailor Moon was.
Sailor Moon and Dragon Ball Z were the first anime shows to get enough fan base to push North American networks into airing more anime.
Sailor Moon has been translated and aired in more countries world-wide than the other shows on this list, meaning it exposed more fans internationally as well. It continues to air in other countries, just not in North America.
And in Japan, Sailor Moon redefined the magical girl genre, inspiring other female mangaka to write about fighting girls as something other than sexy side kicks or healers. Sailor Moon inspired a whole generation of mangaka, including CLAMP.
And that is why I laughed. Because Naruto, while well-loved and popular, just hasn't changed the anime world... yet. Maybe it will in the future, who knows?

For the record...
I'm not angry at younger fans for not being exposed to the same anime I was exposed to. And no, I'm not anti-new anime, nor do I deny the popularity of shows like Naruto and Bleach. I have no doubt that those shows introduced anime to many new fans and I think that's great. (Said it before and I'll say it again...)
My point was and still is, when discussing 'the greatest anime character of all time,' the more you've watched, the more you know.
To further clarify, I'm copying part of my original post from the announcement of the Top 16.
"As an old school otaku, I think the most interesting thing about this list is that if you took the same survey ten years ago (before DeathNote, One Piece, Code Geass, Naruto, Bleach, Black Butler, Gurren Lagaan, etc), it would look almost entirely different.
That's what makes it so fun - in ten years we could do this again and half the characters will be forgotten and a whole new batch will take their places."

Really, while Ed is a better developed character than Goku, and Lelouch a better developed character than Ichigo, neither one deserves the title of greatest anime character ever, in my opinion. And I definitely think Spike is a better character than L.
Really the only one that went right in my eyes was Sailor Moon defeating Sesshomaru, but I don't see Sailor Moon as the greatest anime character ever either... -0-

What I think is that this "battle royal" really is getting to people...In my opinion I think It is just another way to pin us all agenst eachother...I think we shouldn't fight about this...I have always viewed theO as a very nice place, full of people who got along. I haven't either but I know it provides background info on L according to a few friends of mine who HAVE read it. I think Ed deserved to beat Goku. He's been through a lot more than Goku and y'know.. it kinda makes it seem like he's stronger. Goku's y'know.. all he's got is brute strength. He's normally in one mood and it makes him seem kinda.. idk. But it doesn't make him seem all that great.
Now Ed on the other hand, he's actually got a personality. He goes throug all this crap while trying to get his mom back and stuff and he ends up almost loosing his brother. In my opinion, Ed is kinda deep.
Now. Goku shouldn't win just because he's older. Yeah, he's cool. But not many people know about him anymore. People know about newer anime like Bleach, Naruto, and FMA. I'm not saying he's a BAD character, I'm just saying that Ed has more things revealed about him that make people like him more. I like Goku AND Ed, but Ed, in my opinion, is better. Partly because of all the stuff he's been through and how he blames himself and such. I know it might not sound like I know what I'm talking about, but I'm not good at describing and explaining things.
But yeah, Ed got my vote.
Hopefully none of you will go off and say something rude about this. It's immature and stupid. It's JUST a competition and if you want different results then do your own somewhere else like on facebook or something. That's what I did with the RP I'm hosting.

I hereby take back every bad thought I've had directed towards the voters on this poll. Lelouch defeated Ichigo! Seriously, I want to... to kiss everyone that voted for Lelouch over Ichigo. Though I won't because that's just stalkeresque creepy. Anyhow, now that I got that out of my system...
I'm honestly very surprised that [even considering how much I like him] L is still here. It seems like an open wound for many of those commenting, but I'm merely surprised - even if I didn't vote for him. As far as Sailor Moon is concerned, I'm glad she made it this far but I really don't think she should win - although I'd be more than happy if she made it to the final two. Which brings me to Edward Elric. While he isn't close to being my favorite, nor do I think that he is the greatest character ever - he has got my vote.

I love that new shows inspire new fans, honestly I love some newer anime as well. It's the lack of awareness of the older anime that is frustrating.
For example, Naruto fans were upset that his character didn't make it to the final rounds. However Kishimoto Masashi admits that he created Naruto in Goku's image. Shouldn't those fans also be upset that Goku lost? After all, without Goku, there wouldn't be a Naruto.
@Adam and theOtaku staff - Can we create a feature that focuses on the history of anime? Just a few article ideas off the top of my head - the evolution of decent dubs, Censorship vs Sailor Moon: The Fight for Anime in North America, the influence of Dragon Ball Z on contemporary shonen, or articles that highlight series that created or redefined genres. What do you guys think?

Spike Spiegel should have won clearly. At this time, it has to be Sailor Moon. There must be no arguements regarding this decision. LeLouche is too new of a character. Ed is good but not great. L is fantastic but should not have beaten Spike at all.

I'm happy with the results. I personally do not think Sailor Moon deserves it. Just because she is old...Does not mean she should win the whole thing. I find her character weak....And the show...it was rather...dumb. The only thing on the list I think she really fits is influence.
And raise your hand if you did not know that Sailor Moon was anime when you watched it. All the other three? I did.
I think that all of these characters deserve to be where they are. (except Naruto...He should have won. I think he's had the same amount of influence as Sailor Moon...and his character is better than her)

I'm guessing Sailor Moon or Edward will win if votes go by the proper criteria, but if fangirls vote....probably L, or possibly Edward.

wow...looking at these results, no wonder I'm feeling further and further detached from the entirety of anime fandom, Spike and Goku SHOULD have made it through.(and I actually, HATE DBZ, but even I know this ridiculous)
I'll put in a vote for Sailor Moon where I need to (another character I dislike but hold respect for the influence she has) and do my part to bump up the only deserving character left, but it's pretty obvious how this is gonna turn out.

I'm so disappointing with the anime community. In order to really understand great anime, you would have needed to have watched late 80's and 90's anime, there are too many anime babies voting. I really hope Sailor Moon wins this, she's really the only one that deserves this.

Interesting outcome. Definitely not who I was expecting to still be in this week. I'm incredibly disappointed that Spike did not make it out as the champion of his battle. So now I'll be cheering for either Lelouch or Ed.

The only Character left with any real history behind them is Sailor Moon.

I don't get it... most of us are complaining about fangirls, but... hey, I voted for Ed and I voted completely based on what the guidelines are. *shrug* :/ Give those of us who aren't fangirls/fanboys some credit for using our brains too, yeah? =_=

Spike and Goku are out. I guess ill be siding with the Sailor Moon fans. And how did Ichigo make it into this tournament in the 1st place. Ichigo is as interesting as a piece of firewood. His sword is more interesting than him.
