overall L did make for a very interesting character, but in my personal opinion, his character development didn't quite overcome Spike's.
Death Note was a very good anime, but I'm voting for Spike on this one because I feel it takes more than a quirky personality and ingenious detective work to be the greatest anime character of all time.

Everyone is going with Spike. :'( I personally am much more of a fan of L. Mostly because I don't really like Cowboy Bebop, and I was quite angry when Adult Swim stopped playing Death Note. I actually like the character Light, but L has a much bigger fanbase and his geniusness is pretty amazing. I'm pulling for you L, I hope the Death Note fans come through!
Well, you're not the only one who's rooting for Spike partly because of what happened with Kenshin. To be fair with the cowboy, though, he is quite cool.

on the other side you find Spike which is a very cool character, a bounty hunter IN SPACE, and the anime was done before CGI got its oddly coloured and annoying hands on anime, which showed a very well created anime.... I can keep going on for some time and this make Spike the winner irrelevant of the outcome
L's a cool character and I always liked him best in Death Note. He's quirky and interesting.

These 2 characters have personalities so different, I have trouble deciding. Combining L's genius mind with Spike's power and badassness, I think that's truly the greatest anime character of all time XD

spike is just a cooler character all around. he seems way more developed personality wise than L. course i could be biased since i never watched death note (what i know is from what friends have told me), but have watched all the cowboy bebop episodes at least twice
My vote went to Spike. This one was harder for me than the last one was though, since I think both characters are really well developed and unique. Throughout the course of the series we were able to see many different sides to them and they both had great motivations. They both also have very easily recognizable appearances. Spike had a few advantages though.
When it comes to back story Spike has more of it, and it is very nicely established throughout the course of the anime, and plays a large role in his motivation and personality. He also goes through more character development than L (though L does get a good bit of this as well). L, being a genius, doesn't react in a very relate-able way to certain situations like Spike does, which gives Spike a very realistic and humanistic feeling to his character. Cowboy Bebop being more influential to the anime community over Death Note also gives Spike a bit of a edge over L in my book as well.
They are both amazing characters, I just find one to be a bit more amazing than the other.
