Kamina gets my vote. He has a good deal of challenging the impossible and inspiring others to enhance their confidences during tough times, battle or no battle. Plus, this character has influenced the anime world in terms of manliness, counting epic attitude and physical appearance.
As for Sesshomaru, he is too full of himself.

All this talk of people not voting for characters that they don't think deserve the title irks me to no end. It's not fair unless you like them both so much that you can't decide!

Its nice of people to try to delude themselves into thinking this ISN'T a huge popularity contest, but it is. And in all honesty, whichever side you take in each... you're going to justify to the utmost of your ability. There may be some people who've experienced both characters and can choose in a somewhat objective manner, but in the end it is still a subjective question. I can honestly live with it because it doesn't really matter who wins, and even if I don't agree with some of the characters who made it into the final 16... it doesn't diminish what the characters that I like have done in my opinion, just as it shouldn't diminish what the characters that each of the people who vote did for them. Would it be nice to see some of my favorite characters recognized? Sure, but I'm not going to get all bent out of shape if they don't.

I'm disliking all the comments, not only on this poll but all of them, about, "I've never seen [this] anime so I'll vote for the character from [that] anime". What's the point in that? Is that fair? How can someone judge "greatest character ever" when they have no clue about the qualifications of each competing party? If you don't understand/know a little but about each character, be honest/fair and sit the vote out.

errrr....I had to vote for Sesshomaru. He was my first real anime crush. I cannot count Yami Yugi...cause I did not know that was anime when I liked it. XD
It was a tough vote. But...I always go for the silent types. lol
If Kamina doesn't win this round, I will lose all hope in the anime fan world. People voting for Sesshomaru solely on the fact that they haven't seen Gurren Lagann are missing probably one of the greatest anime series (and some of the greatest characters) since the classics. I voted for Kamina. The anime that he was in, while still be fairly new, has had a great impact on the anime community by deconstructing the mecha genre and then reconstructing it. His phrases are well known and often repeated and he is the manliest of men.
Inuyasha is a classic Shonen series and it was one that I know got many people into anime. It was a good fantasy/action-adventure series and many of the characters and their sayings (such as Kagome's, "Sit boy!") stand out. Never mind the hilarious CN commercial of Inuyasha and Kagome screaming out each others name for nearly a whole minute.
So yes, both have impacted the anime community quite a lot. Focusing on the characters now...Sesshomaru isn't really anything that special. Though he is a great example of an aloof older brother and his relationship with Rin (and watching him gain some human emotions) is well done. He also has a very distinctive appearance, a good background story, motivation, character growth and etc.
Kamina, however, while being a pretty card-board cut out, loud mouth Shonen lead type character...He, well, he ends up BECOMING the motivation of the all of the other characters in the series.
While we don't know that much about his past or about his motivation besides the basics, his death (which, since it happened *so early on* gives him some *huge* kudos points) ends up BEING the background for the other characters and it is continuously *through him* that the other characters (even ones that never met him) are able to grow and change and face challenges head on. It is also because of him (and his death) that the series' plot is able to advance and continue to advance.
Kamina's epic appearance is also easy to spot and instantly recognizable due to the eye-popping nature of it. So Sesshomaru, as epic as he is, just isn't quite epic enough.
