I think a major part of One Piece's success is that it's quite original. I mean, every time I watch an episode and something happens that could never happen in real life, of course I tell myself, "It's anime; just watch, don't question." But for this series, I kinda enjoy suspending my disbelief.
First off, don't go calling yourself "Resident TRUE One Piece fan" as if you're the only one, punk. There's more of us die-hard One Piece fans here.
Second, it has more to do with just the books. Yes, the manga is AMAZING but you also have to take into consideration the anime, movies, merchandising and the broad, multi-demographic fanbase that has spread despite less-than-complimentary editing and dubbing in various markets. Some may complain about Naruto and Bleach fans taking over everything, but those are nothing compared to all of the One Piece fans out there.

What they didn't tell you is that all 56 volumes made it on the top 200 book list of Japan. One Piece has over a quarter of the list. Go One Piece!
