The mother was right to end the boy's gameplay for the day when he was disturbing people. I'm mean people shouldn't be playing highly extreme loud noises at night anyway. As for the poor cops, all the mom had to do is hold the game hostage until the kid's willing to respect the other people in the house, so she shouldn't have needed to waste the time of the police.
And halfway across town, a convenience store was being shot up.
This is just insane. I don't care if your kid doesn't listen to you, you don't call the damn cops over it. You know what you do? You unplug the Playstation. It gets his attention, it stops him from playing, and if he loses any save data, it's his own damn fault for ignoring her. My mom used the "pull out the cartridge" method on my Gameboy, and let me tell you it was effective.
Congratulations, mother of the year. Thanks to your ineptness at doing your job, someone probably died in a fire or something.
EDIT: And it appears she tried that. Huh. I suppose a slap on the cheek would get her sued these days. Thanks, society.

That's pretty hardcore in the "flimsy parenting" department but sheesh...what else can one say to that? If the twelve-year-old refused so harshly that his mother had to call the police, there's other things I'd be worried about here, and it's not the video game.
Also, why am I holding a knife in my mouth as the news pictu - ohhhh.

Thats when the MOTHER turns off the playstation and locks it in her room until further notice. The kid isn't learning to "respect his mother" so much as he is learning to fear the possible presence of the police, imo.
..Kastom hit it on the head ._. doesn't she know that the time she had the police come into her home to play parent to her kid meant less police to be sent out for more serious crimes and possible death prevention?
And yeah, the kid's a brat. Deserves a good grounding or something.
That's really sad, in all honesty.
It's sad to know that some man could have been dying while this mother called the police over a Playstation.
Sad, sad, sad...
Wow, I'm not sure who to side with on this; maybe all of them in a way. Yes, the kid was a jerk for playing his game so early in the morning and probably waking up the rest of his family with the noise. Yes, the mom possibly overreacted a bit in calling the cops. And the cops, after leaving the scene, were probably like, "Seriously; we seriously got called in for this?" On the bright side, ma'am, at least you know where your kid is at 2:30 and that he's not out getting high or into trouble or something.
This very disappointing. Police have other important things to prevent...
I bet it wasn't the first time the kids didn't listen to her.
Then i own gta 4 and a playstation. Last time checked there was something called "PARENTAL CONTROL" somewhere in the settings. DUH use it! If she approves the game put the code in and let the kids play...sheesh...
I feel bad for the police who had to respond to this...
"Mejia (the mother) said she approves of athletic-themed videos, but as for 'Grand Theft Auto,' she said, 'I would never buy that kind of video. No way. I called (police) because if you don’t respect your mother, what are you going to do in your life?'"
On another note, the kid did have three other siblings. Plus, the mom is a single parent. So, it might have been one of his siblings or a friend of his.

1. The fact that the mother called the police for something as ridiculously small as this.
2. The fact that the kid would not listen to his mother and turn off the damn Playstation. Come on kid, listen to your freaking mother. Don't be a little douche.
I do like how the article was written though. Especially the bit at the end that was put:
“Adults tend to view video games as isolating experiences,” Kutner said. “Kids view them as social experiences. It’s a way in part - especially for boys - of gaining social acceptance.”

Yeah, your fanart from the past was the first drawing I had in mind that resembled something like "computer and game addiction".

Screw calling the fire department for a cat in a tree, call the cops when your son is playing GTA.
Also this is in Boston, the same city whose police force couldn't tell the difference between harmless lights shaped as a mooninite and C4.

Two reasons I am disappointed to hear this:
