Well, he's actually a very well liked character by some characters (i.e.: da ladies!) He's highly disliked by Leo because he flirts with his sister, who actually likes him when the two of them are alone. His smugness is just a show he feels required to put on around his school-mates to make them believe he's top dog. He's intimidated by Leo, and tries to casually chase him away from his sister, yet he's not a bully.
It's easy to "admire" his undeniable talent, skill, and grades in his best classes, however, he doesn't have any true friends, and tends to be hard to get along with in general.
He cares about his biggest fan girl and very much appreciates her help, however denies her invitation due to his quest for a relationship with the main character Luna.
