That's how you learn is to try. It's not bad for your first try there. One thing that will help you color in the shapes all the way to the lineart, is try to zoom waaaay in on the pic, so everything is pix-elated. That way you can fill more precise. Shadows just take practice, I'm not so great at doing shadows in clothes either. My only advice on that is to look at other people's fanart and see how they fill in shadows and use light play, that's what most of us do.
If you don't mind, some time if I have time, I'd give your character a go at coloring it?
