You said it all. Seriously, I have nothing to say. Such beautiful piece of art, and the description you wrote, really moved me. When I was in high school, my friends used to call me retard-not because I was one but because I was an anime fan (such a stupid reason for hurting someone). Any ways it was really hard for me at that time. And you know how high schools are like, everything is stereotyped there. Now that I am in uni, I am in peace.
P.S I am a Paki and in our country only 1% know what animes are.
OMIGOSH! I did not realise that I haven't replied to this... Sorry!
Anyway, I understand where you're coming from now. I was less mature when I wrote that comment: a lot has happened in the time between when I wrote that and now, and I believe I've grown up a bit. I know you weren't meaning to be mean. And I guess it was kind of stupid of me to take offence. It really was. I have a better understanding of the meaning of the word now, and I'm also more educated in the whole disability concept.
I really would like a link to that site, please. Especially after today: I found out that Australia automatically eliminates consideration of diabled people for migration purely based on the fact that they are disabled. I, personally, think this is atrotious.
I can't say how many times I've come back to look at this work. It must be, what, twelve or so times now? Maybe not so amazing, but it was on my screen every time I looked at my iPod as my wallpaper.
I showed this to my VC&D teacher today, and he asked for a copy of both the picture and your comment, FUNimation. I also spent about ten dollars worth of printing money trying to get the stupid printer at school to print it out as A3. Eventually, we just used one of the A4 ones to photocopy it, and now a beautiful A3 print-out of this is sitting right on my bedroom wall. This picture means a lot to me, because all of the aspects of it are very close to home.
Yet again, I say thanks to you for drawing it and showing people your side of the debate on labels. Cudos to you, FUNimation! You rock! ^^
Please pardon me, but it would realistically seem that you excuse the fact that the bible is a spiritual book and unless you've been given the spirit to understand its meaning all you see is what the rest of the world sees. What you fail to see is why they were restrictions in why the people were not allowed to do this or that. Pork is obvious enough, for the gene in and of its fat, being so close to human, it was easily added to the body, hence heart attacks, clogged arteries, etc.. John didn't sanction same sex relationship because in the OT AND THE NT such a thing is against God main purpose for a man to a woman. There is only death that way, spiritually and physically and for a society to flourish it must not be that way or there would be no life after them.
You can sit there and call wrong right as much as you want too, it is your right, and we're allowed to fool ourselves as much as we need to, I guess to believe a wrongs a right; so for overstanding and what nots,"Sodom and Gomorrah", weren't destroyed for homosexual acts alone, they were destroyed for things like, human sacrifices, bestiality, and any of the other things spoke of not to do in books like Leviticus, according to God. They were destroyed for every sort of debauchery one could imagine according to scholars. Their sins, the bible says, went up to God. Now I would think God got a lot more things to do than hear about some petty single sin.
The bible is the word of God and it is the final law here, maybe not anymore in the land, as it gradually move towards evil deeds. It seems you're trying to excuse the sin by saying, remember historical values as to indicate some sort of outdatedness, as to dismiss the other purpose of the bible, which is to bring spiritual health and turn us away from the evils we would do in the flesh. It's your right to do so, but anyone who hears and disobeys, looses; and the things of the bible is foolishness to those perishing is what I and others must remember.
To me it seems like, its a crack addict saying, yeah cracks fine, smoke some? The idea is absolutely ridiculous. The Word Of God says its wrong on both sides of the field, if this offends you, or find the need to circumvent the facts of its statement, that's on you, it is after all, your life.
You have to remember that things in the bible must be understood within their historical context. Jews were also not allowed to eat pork because it was considered "unclean," and divorce was grounds for stoning. John didn't sanction same-sex relationships because he saw it as a part of pagan worship.
I know this doesn't exactly relate to your comment, but I thought I should throw it out there anyway, you know, for understanding and whatnot. There are those who would also condemn homosexuality because of the story of Sodom and Gomorrah within the Book of Genesis. Nowhere in the bible is the word "homosexuality" used. Suppose that the angels had been presented as women. Would people condemn heterosexuality because of that? Sodom and Gomorrah preached against rape and violence.
Picking and choosing from the bible, or any holy text for that matter, to justify something isn't right. I say that as a strong Catholic and supporter of same-sex relationships.
When I was in grade one,up to grade four. A girlvwhich hated me because I had red ringlets for hair, said mean things about me which are unmentionable, I lost allmy friends and would eat in the bathrooms. Luckily grade four was my last year there and I moved to a catholic school in Australia, where I made friends and everyone found me to be a funny, charismatic young girl. I'm now at a grammer school and am so happy that I have friends.
You should cherish your friends and the people that love, and always, always remeber that it's better to have one more friend than a enemy.
I don't feel like I can't add anything that hasn't been said. ; A;
But still, this is a really moving piece and I started crying reading your description, simply because of how painfully true it is.
A lot of people don't realize the tiniest actions or smallest words can seriously affect someone. Sometimes it's not even what you DO say, but rather what you DON'T say. Small, insignificant compliments or a "good job!" or something every now and then can literally make someone's day.
Even just having a small conversation with someone who is alone can help. Sadly, a lot of people don't realize that, and if they do, they ignore it.
I was most affected by the "Retarded" and "Ugly" ones, because they're things that hit closer to home. My best friend's brother has Down Syndrome, yet he's one of the nicest, funniest, and awesome kids I've ever met.
Great, inspiring piece. I wish and hope that it helps create awareness in people to look past what they see, and to think before they act.
When you said 'if someone is mentally retarded, that means they ARE slow' I started crying. Look, I'm not trying to make you feel bad or anything, but my brother is mentally retarded, but he is in NO WAY slow. He keeps up very well with his class, and he is a very nice person. And it hurts me so much to think that just because his brain doesn't work properly, and he can't move his left hand, and his walking is odd and he can't keep his eyes in the same place for any period of time, that this is reason for people to think that he is slow, or he is stupid. He gets A's constantly in Math class, C's and B's in English and so much more. And I just wanted to say that just because someone's retarded, IT DOESN'T MEAN THEY'RE SLOW! They're jsut... Different. Maybe they can't do everything someone else can do, but they are NOT slow. They just have a problem that is impossible to overcome.
Again, I mean no offence to you at all. I just thought I'd put my opinion on that particular comment forward.
I was gonna hope for monthly chat sessions? Like, a free chat room open on some Friday night or something where people can log in and share what they've seen, done, or dealt with in the last month? I'd prefer Friday nights since I'm sure I'll be busy any other night... actually, even Friday nights might get busy for me this semester, but... eh, we'll think of something if this idea ever reaches fruition.
What if we could also look up charities online and perhaps the group could open up commissions for our members to donate to charities about bullying and harassing? I'd say 100% of funds would go to the charity, perhaps... I'm unsure about that. But, it gives us something to think about if the idea is sound. I'd certainly open up commissions for a cause like that. ^_^
Oooooo very nice name! Very creative as well as a deep meaning! :D
I'll try my best to be a good president~ And I'll start collecting members once we get an account stable and up and running. :) I think it's best to set a clear goal on what kind of things the organization will be doing and such. That way people that join know exactly what they have to do for the group such as drawing pictures or making graphics that help display a certain problem. Bullying and Abuse and everything is a broad topic, so we could focus on raising awareness of one aspect every week or month or so.
and It'd be best we have a group of strong leaders that are pretty active so the group has a really good structure and we don't have to worry about it dying out in a few months or so. We really want to make an impact.
What about "Otakus Against Terrorizing and Harassment"? That's definitely something we can think on with help from others. ^_^ I like the ring of it, though. Let's get more feedback from other members before we decide, though.
Fff, I nominate FUNimation for Prez, yo.
Does anybody have any ideas they'd like to share here? ^_^
I'd love to be an advocate and member. Hell, I'll join the admin group if you're willing to allow me. XDDD
If we're to create a separate account, I'll create a new World on my own account as well and link it. ^_^
We'll see where it goes?

Hmmmm...I'm not sure;;
Or maybe we could just create a whole new account that is purely for the cause? I know I'm part of the group Project FANTASY(sadly not many of it's members are active anymore ;A;) and we made it's own account. It helped it keep organized and we can all share the account. Of course the passwords would be given only to the administrators of the group and stuff, then all of the other members can just become guest posters.
I can try and help round up members and you can work on the account maybe? Plus I'm sure a bunch of more people can help us :D

Sounds awesome! :D
We could have a bunch of sister worlds too like people who want their own word, but have the same cause. and we could link to each other and create a big network sort of thing(if that makes sense.) xD
Would you like to create a world? It was your idea anyways. :) Plus I'm not very good at organizing groups and stuff;;
I agree with FUNi. I'd be ecstatic to start and join a group to raise awareness of bullying, both in real life and over the internet, here on TheOtaku.
You know what? We really should start a group. Let's do it! Anyone would be able to join and we could even hold weekly, or bi-weekly, or monthly group chats on TheO~! That might help. People could share their experiences there, or as journal posts on the group journals. And, anyone could provide feedback and solutions to help one another.
I'd be willing to be an advocate and strong member. I'm here at TheO almost every day and I've been trying to be more social lately. ^_^ I'm sure there are a TON of members who would love it.
I'd approve of this idea. ^o^

now I read these comments thoroughly everyday, but I didn't reply to many.
But this one I've got to reply to
It really makes me happy seeing everyone trying to understand each other's opinions and everything. :D This really helps getting people together.
And I completely agree with finding a solution. People have great power. The more people the louder the voice. So if we all band together, I'm sure we can make a difference, even if it's just a baby step. And maybe it can go on and inspire other people to change or at least think about their actions or maybe artists creating more pictures like this one.
I really like the awareness group idea. :) And the program could cover things like online bullying and safety as well. A lot of people are more open on the internet, and I know without the people on here I wouldn't have matured as much as I have.
So what ever happens, I really hope that we can make some kind of group thing :D That would be really cool and helpful to others. I know that a lot of people may have trouble standing up for themselves. And you seem like a strong person Waves, so maybe an effective speech on confidence or something? xD
I know that I've had some self esteem problems simply because I'm very clumsy, gullible, and I make a lot of mistakes. And I've been put down by a lot of people, sometimes including family members, and it really hurts. One friend that I trusted suddenly turned bad and they tore down my self esteem. I stopped having confidence and I didn't believe in myself at all. One mistake that I feel really stupid for was to not stop talking to them sooner. I was young, stupid, gullible, and way too trusting. I stayed around and kept talking to them to see if I can change them and get my nice friend back. By the time I had finally given up, I hated myself. I felt really alone for a while, and I didn't ask anyone for help because I thought no one would care or if they did, they wouldn't understand. I still have trouble with believing in myself, but I have recovered a lot. Simply because I opened my eyes and saw my true friends. People that will help me through hard times and will try their best to understand me. Also, due to a family incident, I found that my family really does care more than I thought and they'll try their best to help. But I'm doing alright now. Sometimes time is what will help heal you.
So there's my side of the story. XD Everyone shared theirs and I wanted to be brave too.

It's true. Words aren't to blame and the person behind the words is the problem. Anyways, it gets very technical that way. Bullying is the problem, indeed, so now that awareness has been raised we can all do our part to prevent it.
Like I said to the other person, I'll stop here. Haha. It was nice to hear what you had to say, though.
I'm replying to acknowledge your comment, which I did read.
Anyways, I'll surrender here because I know there's no point in this since everybody has one solid opinion that they'll never willingly change.
Just thought I'd leave you a comment to let you know your voice was heard.
I bawled, man! I bawled when I saw this! I bawled when I read some of these comments! ;-;
To those of you here, or those of you who will read this.
SOME of us can't just brush off hurtful things! SOME of us can't help but hear what's being said about us behind our backs! SOME OF US ARE AFFECTED.
Yes, I CAN brush it off when someone calls me goth. I dressed in a lot of black in high school. Since I started college, my wardrobe has gotten a lot of color into it. But, I didn't change what I wore because of what others were saying. I changed because that part of my life was over and I was able to move on. High school was hard.
But, I still get shit from people about being in a same-sex relationship. I'm bi! Why is that such a big thing to everyone else? It hurts that I love this man, and no one else can see that... they're too busy being preoccupied with the fact that he has a d*** and not boobs.
Y'know, people used to preach about only having heterosexual relationship for a reason? Because, back then, it was to keep the species going. But, guess what? The Earth is OVER-POPULATED with humans today. Same-sex relationships are the new way of keeping human numbers at a better number in order for the Earth to survive. It's okay to love another man or woman. Love is love, and we pair off to keep each other safe. Why do homophobes always assume that since I'm with another man, I'm gonna come after them too? That's not realistic at all! I mean, really... how many rapists are homosexuals? ;:(
Growing up, I had a friend who was, well, big. I also had a friend who's metabolism was so high, she looked anorexic. But, she could put away BOXES of Cheez-Its, I seen it! And she wasn't puking it back up, either. And, guess what? She was made fun of for it. My wide friend was made fun of for his girth. But, he was kind and sweet. Granted, we all had a falling out, but I remember the good times I had with them. I saw the hurt they dealt with from day to day. It was hard for me, as a friend, to deal with. Imagine how it was for them? You can only ignore people for so long, until your walls crumble, you know.
I know labels aren't going away! I KNOW THAT! I don't expect them to. Shallow people exist, they always will. But that doesn't mean we can all just suck it up and get on with it! It's not about the words or the meaning behind them, but how YOU feel when YOU hear them talking about YOU. YOUR emotions are just as important as the next person's.
What matters is how YOU perceive YOURSELF. Whether you can get over the name-calling, or not, it's about your inner image of yourself.
So, yeah, some of us CAN get over labels. But, some of us can't. So, don't you DARE come to me and say "get over it". Because, guess what? I can't!
Sorry for the wall of text, FUNi-chan. I had to get that out. I freakin' ADORED this piece of art. You've really outdone yourself. Congratulations.
I love it . It actually made me cry . I rarely her , in my life , it doesnt matter what others think . I hear to much "it does matter" and i wish i didnt. Im goth , yes , and im kinda chubby , but people only care about that which is just sad. I get picked on everyday because im "EMO " as they call it and"FAT" and that really hurts me deep but im not about to change myself for somebody else. at school i have no friends im in my own 'group' and all the students and even some teachers pick on me. I go home alot of days and cry. one time i was at a party and there was a gay couple and the people in charge of the party made them leave because they were gay and i stood up and said 'Thats no right. i mean everybodys different . How d u like it if you picked on for being in love. i bet you wouldnt like it.' maybe i should have rephhrased it differently but i was mad . and i got kicked out too. and they were 'the populars' so by the next day everyone knew and nobody would talk to me. My grades are bad and im extremly bad at sports . the only thing im good at is drawing anime and being me. if you dont like it too bad . thats what i tell some peple based on their comments . but yeah i love your picture i can really relate and its beautiful!

What in the...geez I'm SO SO LATE WITH THIS xDD How dare I be such a horrible friend..being late to hug/comment on such a GORGEOUS and MEANINGFUL pic T__T This is WONDERFUL Ima-chan..and the message is truly truly profound..I just love it so much!
First I'll talk regarding the message.
I truly TRULY agree that people do take things a little bit too lightly everyday...it's just absolutely frustrating when people use "gay" or "retarded" or "weird" just in daily language to describe objects or even other people when they don't even acknowledge the deeper meaning of the words. I mean seriously for people that truly ARE gay or retarded from some disorder or other reason, it can definitely be hurtful and so so many people just take that for granted. We are human, it's normal for us to create groups and "affiliations" with people we "identify with". But it is also normal for us to be judgmental or even afraid of people we deem "strange" or people that we don't trust. It's a complicated system that many of us are trying to prevent, and sadly there really are only a few people out there that understand the deep meaning behind simple words like these.
I don't know if I can relate to the others, but I definitely know that probably many of us can relate to the girl holding the "ugly" sign in her hands. Many of us are given this idea of what is "perfect", whether from media, our parents, or just a lack of confidence in ourselves, and because we strive so hard to do our best we feel that if we aren't what is considered "socially acceptable" then we are a failure in life as a whole. Some people even find others "unlike them" in body shape/size to be unfriendly or rude, or are quick to make snide remarks about them, and I just really find that to be unfair..like you're not even giving them a chance like that other person who might weigh a few pounds less. What's the big deal? We are all human, born with hearts, and are on this earth together..so why do we work so hard to create differences among ourselves??
But in any case, I love the message in this pic. I can relate to the girl holding the ugly sign the most..for in a place where parents are as strict as mine in a culture that is also rather confined in a way, being "thin" is the "real deal" over there. My parents are much more accepting, but when I go over to Korea, it's a whole different world. But still, many of these ideas uphold.
Regarding the pic, I really love the colors you used..they are soft and not highly saturated, which is great because then people can focus on the message. I LOVE how you are able to distinguish all of them so well, you truly are a master at portrayal in art ^^ The coloring style and composition as always is great, and I am so so glad that so many people can put their hearts into this. ^^ Wonderful first submission of 2011 Ima-chan!!<33 I LOVE YOU SO MUCH TOO!<3 You are truly a sweet and wonderful friend and keep staying the amazing you that you are!<333 I'm so honored to have such a wonderful pic dedicated to me T__T Thank you again Ima-chan! Love you!
If people could simply ignore the hurtful comments they receive, then this picture and the contest it's entered in wouldn't have been created in the first place.
But that's exactly the point Jessie is trying to make, that people should be able to ignore those kinds of comments, because those people giving the comments with the intent behind the word shouldn't matter.
I completely agree with what Jessie is saying. It's getting to the point where all of this 'politically correct' crap is getting in the way of us being able to say what we want. Not everything someone says is always nice but we should still be able to have that freedom to speak. I'm not always going to worry about how someone is going to feel about what I say to them because guess what? It's not my responsibility to make sure you feel happy 24/7. Want to feel happy and good about yourself? Fine, then don't listen to anything I have to say. Why would anyone put themselves in a situation where they're being verbally abused, unless they like it? If you're being hurt by someone's words, then it's your own fault for ever listening.
Enough with people putting the blame on others. You got a problem with someone's opinion on you? Deal with it, it's your own fault for caring what they have to say. And to be quite honest, this whole pity party you guys are playing right now is a little revolting. I'm a little embarassed to think that there are that many people out there who think they need someone else to solve their problems for them.
And as your friend moonlit dream said it might sound like I'm picking a fight, the way you or Jessie might have sounded, but like anyone else here I'm just giving my opinion. Anyone who thinks otherwise is a hypocrite.
~Colleen
Side Note: This in no way is a bash on FUNimation's artwork. Generally when I comment I don't focus so much on what it is but how it is executed. On that note your figure proportions are beautiful, and your excessive use of blue works for the message you want to deliver. Also the girl all the way on the left is completely adorable and I could hug her all day long.

DON'T CAUSE DRAMA, TAKARA.
People overreact more on the internet, so watch what you say. To you it could be a friendly discussion, but since you can't give intonation to your voice in typing, you could sound like you're picking a fight.
TheO is also notorious for random drama. (???)
To Funimation: I like this picture a lot, but I am a horrid writer... I can't piece my thoughts together well. So I won't give a lengthy comment like the rest. xD; I would just like to say that it's interesting how similar your opinion on these issues is to my opinion.
And of course, the art is beautiful. :)

Although people are always labeled, some labels hurt more than others. It's not the word, but the intent behind the word that can hurt someone.
And brushing a hurtful comment off is easier for some than others. Everyone's different, and this means a solution for one person might not work for everyone else. If people could simply ignore the hurtful comments they receive, then this picture and the contest it's entered in wouldn't have been created in the first place.
EDIT: Anyways.. just thought I'd leave a comment on your comment. It's always fun to get into discussions like this.

Oh hush that's not dumb. :) I've been here since I was in 6th grade, and back then I was REALLY immature and I complained a lot about petty things and ranted a lot. Ranting usually helps me feel better, and what I've learned from people's view and advice to the situation really helped form my opinion and help me mature. So it's always good to rant, and I'm sure if you're feeling down, you have friends on this site that will listen to you and help you through it. ^^
I'm glad you drew this. Very, very, VERY glad. In my school, especially amongst my grade (I am in 7th grade), there is a lot of this at the moment. I might just show this to them and tell them to suck on that piece of awesomeness. >_>
You are a very smart person for finally bring up the elephant in the room.
//Edit//
...The men holding the sign saying 'Gay' are really cute. >w< And a song that makes this even more powerful would be 'The Opposite Me' by Jing Chang. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uA0zfUg4cVE

FUN-CHAN IS SO POPULAR! XDD I was gonna comment earlier but forgot...BUT MAN....this has some comments XD
<333
Before I put my two cents in...FUN-CHAN THIS PIC IS AMAZING! I am sooo jealous of your amazin art skillz~<3
But everyone below me is right in one way or form. :3 Labels hurt...and not matter what we do they will always be there....unless we take a stand and stop using them.
If this does not work...BE PROUD OF WHO YOU ARE! :D
"I am a crazy Christian otaku, who is fat....AND I AM PROUD!" :D
XD
But seriously....just be kind to another person and you will see what the effect is...
I'll admit it. I personally do not find myself pretty...and I am fine with that...Sometimes it hurts...but I can deal. Yesterday I about cried when my facebook profile picture was flooded with comments about how pretty I looked in my brand new profile picture.
So...sometimes all it takes is a few kind words. ^ ^
As one of my favorite stars says,
"Be kind to one another"
~Chero~
Nah! I'm not offended :) I tend to look on the world from a practical side with no exceptions. (For me the humanity is just instincts with mysterious consciousness) We are brothers and sisters with animals. We seek security, we fulfill our needs and try to develop and know about our surroundings. Everything is explainable.
When it comes to hurting ppl, those ppl who are being the target just have to prove that they are strong enough.
I was fat when I was a kid, friends and even family used to laugh at me and stuff, but I proved to them(lost weight), that I am strong and deserve some respect! If you can't prove it you are a weak unit. (Nietzsche's poetry)
I didn't mean to write this much again ;/
Thanks for the discussion, and BTW this is a nice way you get some attention from the community via art! Social functionality.
Take care.
I love what you are trying convey to everyone. I was blessed enough to grow up in an environment where it isn't uncommon for people that are "labeled" in different cliques to be friends (a.k.a. I love dresses, sophisticated things like silk and high heels, and classical piano where on the other hand some of my best friends love black and neon clothing, thick eyeliner, and All Time Low). It makes me sad and angry when people are quick to judge. We are ALL different. No matter who we are. It doesn't matter if you are homosexual, have a mental illness, aren't born natural gorgous, or if you have different tastes. When you come down to it we are all human, no better than the other. All those differences make us who we are. A person that is special and beautiful in their very own way. I pity those who haven't learned to see the beauty of each person's differences and hope that maybe one day everyone will be able to see.
While I don't agree with certain lifestyles, it's not MY life to live but the other person's. Thus, they choose how they want to live their life as do I.
Words are powerful, more so than we ever can imagine. Very good picture with a very good message. Thanks!
This is what I'd like to consider a "picture worth a thousand words" because you get the deep message just from the picture itself (though reading your artist comment was really nice). There is so much going on in this picture, and it really helps paint an image of how hurtful words can be. I loved your attention to detail and the references behind it.
I love this picture, it's wonderful! I have lived with a couple of the things you mentioned. Since I was 4 years old, I've had a sister who was a quadriplegic who couldn't communicate or move at all. It was hard for not only me but also my mom and dad. To me, I barely have a sister, to my parents, they have a constantly hurt child which hurts our hearts all everyday. I'm now 20, she's 22 and she's been like this since she was 6. Also, during the 10 years of school I was in, I was picked on horribly and since I wasn't as good looking as many of the other males, I was called ugly but I never let it get me down and to this day I've grown stronger because I didn't give up! I'm also a Christian and I find it appalling that so many of the Christians today say hurtful things to the gay community. Sure, have your beliefs but don't condemn another for theirs. God didn't want us to do that. Once again I say this is a wonderful drawing! God Bless!
I really hate labels. I really REALLY hate the emo comment. I've never dressed or acted the stereotype but when people make jokes about emo's cutting its really really hurtful. I am not emo. I dress in fairly trendy fashionable clothes (for people who are five years older than me xD)and yes I like anime, I do cosplay, and I have struggled with cutting and thoughts of suicide most of my life, so when people make jokes about cutting and emos and anime kids it hurts whether they mean it to or not.
Haha yeah there are a lot of comments, and I don't have the energy to reply to them all. XD But I'll go ahead and reply to you.
Reading through them can be interesting though. A lot of people can relate to it, more than I thought would. I would say do it in your spare time. A lot of differing opinions can really make a difference and make you think. :) I know that I learned how strong the effect is after reading To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee. Made a big difference in my life. I had to really question what I believe in and what is really right and wrong. I want to make that kind of influence in the world. State my opinion, and maybe others will think about their actions, and change for the better. Hopefully, that will create some kind of domino effect and others will be inspired and just slowly spread. :D It works out in my mind, hopefully it'll happen in real life. XD
And don't hesitate. You can always say your opinion. Everyone has freedom to say what they believe in. :D And even if you repeat others, sometimes it's nice seeing that a bunch of different share the same views as you~
I read your description and I was also going to read the comments on this but there's so many ~!! XD
Anyway, I love this drawing! Words are very powerful indeed, it could do many things like you said. But you know what, having someone like you and everybody that makes a stand is important now that the media is taking out the real meaning in all these things.
Like Emo, from what I remember it's a musical genre to begin with, not a streotype. I also read somewhere that Emo doesn't even mean Emotional but it means "Emotive".
I have other things to say about the other things but I bet I'll be repeating other people saying this over and over again. Maybe addressing the problem repeatedly would help but without action nothing can be gained.
I just hope that someday the media would give equal amount of attention to this kind of matters than just what is popular and what sells.
Hugged and Faved ~!! Have a great 2011, more art to yah ~!! ^_^
I've been called a couple of things just because of the way I am.
apparently I'm a lesbian just because I don't want to show All of my skin or have under-aged sex (not that I'm against it, people can do what they want). I'm fat just because I eat my lunch and want to stay healthy. I'm tacky just because I don't own a thousand pairs of uggs or wear the over expensive clothing that I cant afford. I'm ghetto just because my skin is dark. I'm an asian wannabe just because I like and draw anime. I find it ridiculous what people want to be these days and I take pride in my differences as well as the few people who are content and being different. I'm basically friendless because of the rumors, but I don't let it affect me.
They also think I'm stuck up just because I don't break down and cry like everyone else they throw their evil words at.
As much as I would like to just snap back and yell at those people, I know it would make me just as bad as they are. And the people name calling have their own insecurities that they are trying to distract us from. So I fight silently, just wondering if they feel as ugly as they sound.
Great peace to start of the year :)
The girl with down syndrome really got to me. In my biology class we are learning about people with disabilities and what causes it. There was a picture of a boy with down syndrome in the book, and as soon as people saw it I could hear snickers coming from the class. I've never known someone personally with down syndrome or any other mental handicap but I just wanted to get up and yell at those kids for being so closed minded. People with down syndrome are some of the happiest people in the world today, they are always smiling and are just happy to be there. I really think we have a lot to learn from them about how treat others.
I really hate stereo types, I really do. I go to a school with a small amount of kids, and back in 6th grade whenever I started watching anime I was constantly made fun of. Even from the mentioning of the word "Japan" in history class I would get stupid looks. So I stopped talking about it. Just this week I was talking with some people in my class and they said "I'm glad you stopped liking that weird Japanese stuff". I would seldom even show my close friends my art that I post on here because I was afraid that they will tease me for it looking to "Japanese".
I really hope that this will show people that it doesn't matter what you are there is no need to discriminate. Even if its against your beliefs that doesn't give you the right to be mean and hateful. I'm a christian and I know that in the Bible it says that you should treat others with kindness even if you don't agree with them.
Thank for posting this online! It has given me a lot to consider :)
I have gotten the "emo" comment a few times in my life. I wish people wouldn't judge a book by it's cover. I have no affiliation with the emo subculture. (Wordnetweb defines subculture as "a social group within a national culture that has distinctive patterns of behavior and beliefs") Besides wearing black clothes with spikes and chains, I am not emotional, in fact am quite the opposite; most people describe me as emotionless. I tried cutting when I was in middle school and not because I was in any emotional distress, I did it out of peer pressure (cutting was the "thing" at my school, luckily it wasn't my thing.)
My sexuality is a little different than others. I am not gay, straight, or bi. I am asexual and I am not too confident too share it with the world. I wish there was a little more love for the loveless... I've had to turn some unlucky guys down because "guys aren't my thing" which would lead them to say "Oh, so your gay?" No. I am not. "Oh... So you don't know yet?" It's hard to explain that I am not interested in boys or girls, that I just am not interested at all. Once when I was leaving a class at campus, I heard these kids talking about asexual people. They said something like "asexuality does not mean you aren't attracted to people, it means you like to masturbate. Thats just plain and simple, you masturbate." Ever since then I was scared to tell people I was asexual because they might think I masturbate. Gross.
I think a topic that needs delving into is anorexia. Most people think that anorexic people starve themselves to look beautiful or binge and purge to do so. This is a stereotype and its not completely true. I didn't tell myself "MUST BE BEAUTIFUL AT ALL COSTS!" and stop eating. The fact is I did eat, but I didn't eat enough. My body just wasn't hungry, it still isn't hungry. I had and still do have classic symptoms of anorexia: pins and needles, skipped periods, loss of hair, loss of skin color, ect. I have been borderline anorexic before, even now I weigh under 100 lbs. What isn't too well acknowledged though is the fact that those diagnosed with Anorexia Nervosa get quite abit more hate than one would think. I guess one would have to be anorexic to know what its like; I lurked around and seen a community that was often ridiculed for being created to bring together anorexics. I would love to join that community but I don't want to be criticized. My point is that most people think Anorexia Nervosa is a mental condition of those obsessed with being thin and beautiful. That wasn't the case for me, I wasn't at all concerned with being the next bathing suit model, I just don't like to eat much.
I hope that makes sense!

Congrats for first submission of 2011!XD
I REALLY admire your drawing!^ w ^ And I loved it!*_*
The message is wonderful and awesome!^_^ Yes,you're right!~
I see this kind of thing every days...A lot of terrible prejudice...>_<
I never encourage such acts...This is so terrible...TT^TT
Well,I hope your drawing able to change people's thoughts!^_^ Actually,I'm sure it's working!> w <
So,Amazing work!^_^ I loved it very much!~
I've heard all these word come from people when they talk about me. My bullying has gotten so bad I have to transfer schools now and the dumb thing is is that nobody cares.
Kino, dear, you're missing the point of the drawing, which I'm guessing is because you hadn't read the entire description. You have very valid points, no doubt, but that doesn't mean the labels hurt any less.
North Korea is a very poor example of the ideal Karl Marx had in mind when he thought up of communism. They don't even use anesthesia when performing amputations there, and the standard of living is very, very poor.
Being called emo by a professional is somewhat understandable, but there is no excuse for the word to be used as slander by one's peers almost every day.
I don't think I know anyone who is happy to be disabled, whether mentally or physically. Edward Elric from Fullmetal Alchemist is a well known protagonist who is physically disabled and is still kick ass, and Jean Havoc *spoiler* becomes paralyzed later on within the series. Lan Fan also *spoiler* cuts off her own arm in order to save Lin. Although the depiction of physically disabled protagonists is rare, there are several animes where the leads are mentally disabled. Take Neon Genesis Evangelion for example, where Shinji Ikari's struggles create one of the main focal points of the series.
Finally, your remarks about beauty ring true, but realize that the reasons most people reject those they consider "ugly" are (usually) unintentionally superficial. If said people spent the time to interact and get to know those "ugly" people, they may be lucky enough to find someone who is truly beautiful on the inside. Anime is a form of entertainment, which is why much of it is what most people would consider beautiful in appearance. If only we lived in a world where one's inner peronality were to be depicted on the outside, then the word ugly wouldn't be as hurtful as it is today.
This is my opinion, of course, and I do sincerely hope that I didn't offend you by it. It was not my objective to do so. I only hoped to clarify some points.

I love this pic alot. It truly does explain what most of our society sees and considers wrong or not natural in their sense. I hate when people talked about people who are mentally challenge since one of my cousin is since birth. Also people who enjoys seeing them fight in school and to those who are not retarded but look like it. I always felt uneasy and really ticked off. People should luv who ever caught their eyes, and fatness doesn't mean uglyness. Most of my family is plump but they still go out and show their stuff without a care in the world, neither do I *except in swimwear*. To those that enjoy wearing black don't go back it's a great shade on anyone and I like wearing that color alot. If more people could understand what they say and think maybe they will become as wise as you who is much younger and sees the world beautifully.
Sorry for the intrusion, but I for one don't know what you mean by "equality is communism." In the case of this picture, it's apparent she didn't mean equality involving property or wealth; she meant equality in respect. In other words, these people should not be singled out for their outward qualities or apparent defects and should instead be regarded and respected as humans, no matter their size, shape, sexuality, or anything of the sort.
On the matter of drawing a disabled human, the message, once again, isn't to single out individuals for their outward qualities. The message is actually quite the opposite; that categorizing people by qualities that aren't considered "normal" is unjust and hurtful. If she was to draw a disabled person, perhaps you could argue against her for doing that. You could say, "Since you've drawn a disabled man, you are stereotyping all disablities and are therefore discriminating against them."
To be honest, she probably wasn't considering aethestics when drawing this picture, and anyways I don't really understand your argument in using it.
Furthermore, I think, though forgive me if I'm wrong, you think nobody accept ugliness because you yourself do not accept ugliness. However, this picture proves others are accepting for obviously the artist herself accepts ugliness. Or in fact she does not accept it because she recognizes it as a label and is saying it is wrong. The artist therefore doesn't accept ugliness; she accepts all people and does not characterize anyone as ugly. And I agree with this statement.
Anyways, I had the inclination to refute your comments because this is a lovely picture and I think there is a lot of courage in posting it because she must have known some people would not be happy with it. Even so, I see no reason for your comments denouncing her stand against discrimination, and I am fully aware that I am a hypocrite for refuting your comments against the picture, but I don't care.
EDIT: I also realize this picture was made in an effort to unite people and utilize respect for everyone...... so I guess by singling out your comment I've gone against this picture's ideals. Sorry. I did admit I am a hypocrite.

The meaning behind the picture you posted speaks volumes. I've been blessed with the people I've met and come across. My close group of friends refuse to say things like queer/fag/gay out of respect for those that are. I have a couple of friends who get shirts and braclets from "To write love on her arms" And I've actually done a pic supporting the cause a few months back(It's in my portfolio actually).
I used to be a very shy, short, not so social, really pale guy , and usually got made fun of decently for my paleness. Now I'm more confident and social thanks to meeting some amazing friends accepting me for who i am. Tnankfully I've grown to average height,I'm still pale but it doesn't bother me anymore And im the one doing most of the jokes concerning my paleness now XD

i really like this picture. it means alot.
That's what's wrong in this society, and i know that basically what everybody has been saying, but i know it first hand.
I'm really skinny,it runs in the family. I don't have a eating disorder, and i don't try to. People think that i do because im skinnnier that alot of people. People also call me emo because i wear skinney jeans, or black clothing, which they have no right to call anybody that because they don't know anybodies story. And just because they were different clothing does not mean they are "emo". That's just their style and they need to get used to it. Everyday, kids will taunt me by making wrist-cutting motions to me. I have NEVER self-mutilated myself. And just because i wear different clothing and listen to different music does not make me "emo". The part that makes me mad is that people willl laugh. They don't know how much it hurts to go through something like that for 5 years. It gets to you. and nobody should be put down for anything. Its a free country people, you dont control it.
The girl with the 'ugly' sign looks a lot like one of my friends, except depressed. I hate stereotype words; the only time I'll ever actually use them is when I am referring to anime characters or people who are not real. They don't have feelings to hurt.
Treating everybody and everything equally is called communism or even tyranny if you know what I mean. (N. Korea) Extreme intolerance is also tyranny except for when nation generally agrees to it then it is not.
Emo - it is the term even used in psychological works. There's nothing bad about it, but people generally tend to overuse some terms.
Furthermore, have you ever drawn a disabled human? No, you didn't, and very few have. It's because of our instinctive sense of aesthetics. We want to be surrounded by beautiful things and beautiful people. It is the thing that makes us happy instinctively. (check Maslow's pyramid of human needs). Aesthetic needs are at the very top of it, but it is so compound, we don't realize it. There's (probably) even no anime in which a protagonist is a disabled man. NO ONE accepts ugliness, and if it's emphasized in some art or literary work, it is hardly ever (or never) associated with pleasure.
I haven't read the whole description but there you go.
The drawing is nice though.
i know exactly how it is; words hurt so badly, as used with sadism and even some voluntary on involuntary gestures can shout along with the words
from personal experience, can tell that there are some who won't be able to pass the barriers and sink within themselves;
lack of respect and fake, no-essence type of image, an illusion of perfection are 'cool'.....anything else from the 'trend' for the narrow-minded is a threat
it's very sad
wonderful work, nee
First of all, I'd like to say congrats on the first drawing of 2011. It's really meaningful C:
This picture says everything that is wrong with our society. Why do people think they are better than others because of the way we look? I'm not going to say anyone can be a saint and think nice things of others all the time. Still, to outright discriminate against them is just plain wrong.
I used to be a lot like "ugly" girl. I was bigger than everyone else, and I always got made fun of. It hurt, a lot. Then I lost weight, and everything changed. What does that say? People who never wanted to talk to me before now treat me like I'm their best friend. I hate them for it. Just because I look different doesn't mean I'm any different on the inside ._." They were too caught up in how everyone "should" look to realize that.
And the ones that get me the most are the "retarded" and "gay" drawings. It makes me so angry when people say, "I'm against homosexual marriage". Why? Some people that support gay people don't support homosexual marriage? WHAT THE FUCK?! That's major hypocrisy if I've ever seen it.
And "retarded" people. Sometimes I walk by someone like that, and my friends start laughing thinking it's funny. I love my friends, but I don't laugh. I tell them to stop. It's not like someone chooses to be that way!!!! ; A;
UGH wow, wrote a whole novel there xD
Thank you for drawing this. Hopefully it may change someone, even a little C:
First comment of 2011!
I love this peice, not only the artistic part but the message!
I think you drew the ugly girl (not literally the ugly looking, the one holding the sign) really well, most people dont ever draw fat looking people and I think you did a great job!
And the gay couple is so cute! :D
My boyfriend and I talk about that all the time and we believe that its not a choice. otherwise straight people could have the option to go gay. :/
And who would choose to go through all the fear and pain to be gay?
anyway I love the work! :DDD
You know that someone truly cares when they brick you like that. -AZ
I also want to add that I have made this the wallpaper on my iPod, which is coinsidentally the most used thing I have (apart from my paper and pencils) and so I will see it every single day. It's just... that. It's that. (I don't have words to describe how much this picture speaks to me).
That is such a moving piece of work. I've seen how such things can affect people, and god.
It is not pretty. A moment or two of inconsideration can change how someone acts for a long, long time. I say this from personal experience and from watching what one of my friends had to go through.
This is amazing, and it fully deserves all of the credit it will get.
This is gorgeous beyond words. I read your description from top to bottom and you are so right about everything. I used to be starving myself too just to be skinny, I'm cool now with how I look, but my childhood was still painful on the social side (my parents rock, so I won't add them here XD) because I got called names so many times and I was practically ashamed of myself without having done anything.
I know what you mean and how it feels, so I'm a very open minded person now and accept everyone.
I think I might cry. My brother has Down Syndrome (probably. He has so many things that I can't remember what he has anymore) and I see people just staring at us when we walk down the street. They just stand there and look at us until we pass, or try as hard as they can to avoid eye contact. Sometimes, it's not only words that hurt. Sometimes, it's what you do. You may not even notice it, but you could be making someone feel crap just by sitting a little further away from them.
My cousin's gay and, Oh My Gosh, he gets so much crap because of it. It's not fair. Seriously, he's great! He is one of the nicest people I know, and he's the whole reason i got into anime/manga. He is half the reason that I am who I am. And when people give him a hard time about who he loves, I get so up tight about it.
I am not very attractive in the looks department, I'll be the first to admit it. I've heard people laughing at me because I have ridiculous amounts of freckles, but whatever. They're losers. 'Nuff said.
I am also called 'emo' a lot, even by my parents (although they're just joking). While I do love to wear black, listen to frankly rather depressing music and some of my writing can be... Unsettling to say the least, I think that calling someone 'emo' because of these reasons is just wrong.
I'm not trying to get all the attention on me. I only said all this to show you how thankful I am to you. And after all this, my long rant-comment, I say; thank you. You're taking a stand for what's right, and I salute you for it. I can say that pretty much every single person I know who's been called 'ugly', 'weird', 'retarded', 'emo' or 'gay' would love you forever if I showed them this. I'm sure we're all indebted to you for standing up for us all.
Thank you. *hugs*

It was a real adventure to make the tutorial with your comments. It was fun but I had to do a little script thing about the things you said to form the tutorial. Some dialogs where better for the end and some for the clouds at the beginning. It was a happy moment when I saw the results * Hugs.
Also made the images of the tutorial to match the dialogs and left some hidden details for the observing eye.
Your newest picture also holds an importante message. It's true it's bad to call people by other nicknames and not their true name .I always try to be friendly towards people and this picture made me remember the importance of beeing friendly.
Also it's very well detailed, loved the pose the coloring and the style.
It will be fun to make a nother toturial in the future, hopefully it's in teams again XD.
This is an awesome picture and I really like the message and symbolism in this. I like how much thought you put into this
I know words can really hurt and I can't believe how ignorant and hateful some people can be to someone who's different
I'm sometimes worry about my sister who's Autistic; she's been bullied at school and treated badly even by teachers but I'm glad shes still happy and carefree; she doesn't seem to care about what other people think though
I'll check this exhibit out. Thank you for the link
I couldn't agree more with the message you're saying with this masterpiece. I've wanted to draw something like this, to display how rude and hurtful some people can be, but I'm not an artist at all. Everything that you have said is exactly what I think, too.
Good work <33

This is a really great picture, and the message is a very important one. Words really do hurt, and I understand that. I don't see a single thing wrong with any of these people, though I'm not saying that I've never been judgemental in my life, and I can't stand when I see people upset because of one word someone else has said,

So, yeah. A link would be wonderful, please!

You rock! ^^

@Tamed:

@Gina95:
I do hope I didn't offend you. Have a nice day.

I don't feel like I can't add anything that hasn't been said. ; A;
But still, this is a really moving piece and I started crying reading your description, simply because of how painfully true it is.

This simple yet powerful piece tugged my heart and pulled it down.
Words can really hurt, no matter how trivial others may think of it. I still get hurt over some words people would call me.
I really really love this piece. :)

Any other ideas? :D

Hmmmm...I'm not sure;;

We could have a bunch of sister worlds too like people who want their own word, but have the same cause. and we could link to each other and create a big network sort of thing(if that makes sense.) xD

I bawled, man! I bawled when I saw this! I bawled when I read some of these comments! ;-;

@Afterglow:

Ranting usually helps me feel better, and what I've learned from people's view and advice to the situation really helped form my opinion and help me mature. So it's always good to rant, and I'm sure if you're feeling down, you have friends on this site that will listen to you and help you through it. ^^

@KinoFMA:

@KinoFMA:

The drawing is nice though.

i know exactly how it is; words hurt so badly, as used with sadism and even some voluntary on involuntary gestures can shout along with the words
from personal experience, can tell that there are some who won't be able to pass the barriers and sink within themselves;
lack of respect and fake, no-essence type of image, an illusion of perfection are 'cool'.....anything else from the 'trend' for the narrow-minded is a threat
it's very sad
wonderful work, nee

And "retarded" people. Sometimes I walk by someone like that, and my friends start laughing thinking it's funny. I love my friends, but I don't laugh. I tell them to stop. It's not like someone chooses to be that way!!!! ; A;
UGH wow, wrote a whole novel there xD

-AZ

This is a really great picture, and the message is a very important one. Words really do hurt, and I understand that. I don't see a single thing wrong with any of these people, though I'm not saying that I've never been judgemental in my life, and I can't stand when I see people upset because of one word someone else has said,
I solemnly swear that I am up to no good~
