yes more shading in your work, always have a light source than you can put where the darks and lights will be most at.

value is the lights and darks in your picture. it's to create that 3 dimensional. It really helps when you learn the art elements and principles. http://www.studiocodex.com/value_tone01.html

That should help you a lot with value even though it's black and white tones you can do that with color too.

let's see now I like the idea you are using for this picture it's very dark and sad. And the world is so cold. I think the text takes away from the picture maybe only a little bit of text would be fine. (sometimes text can take away the meaning of the picture or it's just not necessary be careful with it.)

you need to start adding more value.it's showing only a little bit but not much.

His head in the background looks a bit off make it more round.
