No the main characters are already played out for you. But you can fight with different characters. There are aprox 8 different characters you can play with in ToS that include the hero and some other people.

They are basically just story based games. There are many, but none of them are truly linked or belong to the same world. Tales of Symphonia fr instance takes place in two worlds that were once one. Tales of the Abyss takes place it yet a different world. The one thing the tales of games have in common is the fact that they are made by the same people.
