I beg to differ on the defenition of "desu" put here... It's actually difficult to put an exact meaning on the word desu, but if I had to, I'd say it means "it is". For example, "kawaii desu" means "it is cute." Therefore, "kyaa desu" means "it is kyaa", which doesn't make much sense, so it's unreasonable to say.
There are other endings, such as deshita (it was), dewa arimasen (it is not), and dewa aremasendeshita (it was not).
So "Kawaii deshita" = "It was cute", "Kawaii dewa arimasen" = "it is not cute", ect, ect...
These endings can be used on pretty much any nouns to make a simple sentance.
I'm in japanese 1, where we're learning a polite and reasonable version of the japanese language. So I'm pretty sure that "desu" is a polite ending, so using desu gives you polite speech.
By the way, the "u" in desu is silent.

On a side note, I don't even think that a female Hitmonchan is even possible. Well, in Generation II, when Pokemon genders were introduced, they said it wasn't possible. So, my vote is that Hitmonchan-chan is a messed-up homosexual boxer.
