I use the "fushigi" from the name which is written in katakana:
Bulbasaur --> フシギダネ ("strange, isn't it?" or a pun on 不思議種, which means strange seed)
Ivysaur --> フシギソウ("seems strange" or a pun on 不思議 草, which means strange grass)
Venusaur --> フシギバナ (a pun on 不思議な花, which means strange flower)
