Well, you can thank her mother by that happiness and the village wasn't that cruel just a little afraid of her.
About her father...she never knew him and yes, he was evil, but you won't know her history if you don't read the manga

And I just love how you colored it with so much light! It´s kind of weird how shes so happy though when she has been isolated and people have to have been cruel to her because of that curse.
I mean, do you have any idea of what kind of mental abuse a father like that can do to you? Or her...aherm.
