Same as poetry, work it into the story. A good guideline to follow is to make sure that poems or song lyrics aren't more than say 5-10% of the story. Anymore than that is a bit unbalanced.

EDIT: scratch the 5-10%, keep it 5% and lower.

What if you wish to do this based on a song but want to quote some of the lyrics as something a person said? How can I do this without getting in trouble for it?

It needs to be self contained as in not chapter one of a story and no poetry/prose unless it's worked into the story. That's the basic guidelines for fan words so it applies to the contest.

Yes it can be a summer Christmas story since I know some of you are in places like Australia. :p If it's not holiday related, as in Christmas, New Year's, etc, then it has to be winter themed.

I'm not certain yet, I've only just got a very basic idea. I wanted to do a Doctor Who story at Christmas, make it a ghost story (in typical Doctor Who fashion, a ghost being a time echo, etc)... I dont have the whole thing plotted out yet. I certainly don't want it to be a novel, but I won't be sure of the potential length until I've developed the idea more.

There's no limit so you can put in several stories if you wish.

It's better to make Poetry a part of the main story instead of the actual entry. Poetry isn't accepted for Fan Words publication. But if you want to weave some into the story itself, that works.
