It's the second: there should be a 1000px 'blank spot' (just background) in the middle that doesn't have a character in it.
The background as a whole should be as big as you want to make it, but recommended is somewhere between 1300px and 1500px
You could make a picture that can be flipped and mirrored, but you can also make one with two different things on either side. That's totally up to you
I'm so entering if I can find the time UGH why does my university give us only 1,5 week of vacation for the entire year?!?! And I won't have my tablet with me at Son, so yeah... hmmm then I'll have to do the digital stuff from the 3rd when I'm back here. I'll see what I can do ;P
