That makes me think of Jm Butcher's Dresden Files (actual books, with lots of words and no pictures, but still good :P). The main character lives by that quote because his magic tends to be kinda clumsy. He starts out with the element of surprise because he can' have it in the middle of the battle.

I would recommend the movie,I loved it =D The book too,even though it's super long,it's very entertaining.
