SomeGuy's Workshop, Session Ten

Running behind schedule without a plan again, surprise surprise... alright, let's see what we can play with today...

Bits and Pieces, Volume 1:

I couldn't think of any good subjects to do and I'm running late. So instead I'm just gonna do a boring "list of things that are bad" thing today. Call me lazy if you wanna, that's fine. So let's do it:

Coulda, Shoulda, Woulda:

I mention this first since I just say it earlier this week:

I could of beat him in that fight, but he tricked me!
I knew I should of ordered the soup.
I hate that guy... I would of banned him from the chat if I had known.

I don't care if you're being casual or not, but this is wrong, wrong, wrong. It's another one of those things where it sounds like something else. The long form is could have, should have, and would have.

The shortened, apostrophe-using version is could've, should've, and would've. Yes, that sounds similar to "could of" or "would of", but that's not how it works.

So yes. Should've, not "should of".

They're In Their Car Over There...:

I'll ignore the examples. We all know there are three different versions of they're/their/there. We all should know the differences. It's good to know the differences.

  • They're is a contraction for "they are".
  • Their is the 3rd-person plural pronoun form of "they".
  • There is a noun denoting location, like a place.

Overkill to make points about things people already know? Probably. Does it change the fact that a lot of people still tend to make these mistakes? Not really. Should they fix that? Absolutely.

This One Comes Up... Often...:

Alot is not a real word. We may say it fast, but it is a lot. Two separate words.

'nuff said.

Why We Care:

These are pretty much the most basic of the basics. But people still make these mistakes. A lot. They're just way, way too common.

Don't be like that. The world will love you all the more for it.

So, do you guys have any common errors that bug the heck out of ya?
