A Family

Akira

Finding the mansion in the woods in Transylvania, Romania, was interesting but finding out that a vampire was living there also just made it even more worthwhile, especially since she had showed up on the map but I was thinking about going to get her when we got attacked on that stupid plane.

That one guy that I had killed and what he said to me right before Griffin threw me off of him was still stunning me. He told me that the Xenogenesis Lab was going to be looking for us and that we made a mistake, joining together. It was like we were about to start a war, but that wasn’t the thing that stayed in my head. He said something about my father, that he was killed because he had started to find out about this stuff. That was when he died and I had no idea what he meant. Then Griffin pulled me away and had me hang on to him when he jumped out of the plane.

I didn’t mind flying but not when its free falling. I almost puked when we got on the ground.

“Just join us, what have you got to lose?” Sebastian asked. “It’s got to be lonely living in this big place by yourself.” It wasn’t hard paying attention, I was just tired and helping in with the conversation. At least, it felt like it to me.

“I’m not alone, I have my family.”

“Where are they?” I asked.

“Gone.”

Our expressions went from determined to saddened.

“You lost your family?” Karin spoke up.

“Oh gosh no!” Colette giggled, covering her mouth with her hand. “They’re on vacation. Look, I like you all a lot. You all seem like lovely guests. How about your club gets their injuries taken care of, a good meal in their stomachs, and a good night’s rest. In the morning, I will give you my answer for joining the club or not and give you directions to the airport,” Colette told with a smile as she got up and headed over to the group, who was trying to fix the scratches they had or the welts they had from avoiding bullets on the plane. I looked out at everybody and sighed. I really did act like a b**** to everybody within these past few days, didn’t I?

I got up with slight help from Sebastian and walked over to the group and I noticed Griffin wasn’t here. Instead, he was outside, being alone. Of course. They weren’t really paying attention until I cleared my throat.

“Hey, guys, look, we won’t be staying for long or anything. We’re here mostly to rest up and heal. I don’t think anybody got too much of a serious injury, did they?” I asked and they murmured while looking at themselves. I heard mostly no’s out of everybody. I gave a small smile. “That’s good. And look... I’m sorry for the way I’ve been acting. I was acting horrible on my part of everything and I just wanted to say sorry for the way I acted to you guys when you first came into the club. Hopefully, we can actually meet instead of just on plane rides,” I chuckled slightly and all of them just nodded and gave me a smile. That reassured me slightly.

I nodded to them and headed back to where the couches were. Nobody was really paying attention now and even though my nose was stinging because of the welt from that bullet grazing it and my shoulder hurt because of that deep scratch from that knife earlier, somehow, I fell asleep on the couch.

I woke up in pain from my shoulder and my cheek, they both burning and I could feel something soaking into my clothes and I knew immediately from the smell that it was blood. Great. My wounds opened up.

I groaned as I sat up and noticed how late it was. It had to be at least midnight now and all of the lights were off in the mansion. I must’ve slept for over twelve hours or something... At least I was alone. I slowly got up and moved over to where I saw a bathroom from before when I first came in and headed inside, turning on the light. From what was indicated, nobody slept on the first floor so I should be fine.

Once my eyes adjusted to the light, I slipped off the black jacket I had gotten in Moscow and looked at the wounds. They were bleeding profusely so I dropped the jacket and grabbed one of the towels off the racks and pressed it hard against the shoulder wound but I couldn’t grab another towel in time.

“Need help?” I turned around and saw Acacia, I think that was her name, come in and got another towel for me and handed it to me. I pressed it to the bridge of my nose and smiled a little.

“Thanks. Acacia, right?” I asked and she nodded with a confident smile.

“I don’t think we’ve properly met,” She said with a smile and I turned to her as I brought the towels down and touched the wounds gingerly with my hands. They had stopped bleeding for now. I turned to Acacia.

“Well, I’m Akira,” I laughed and she laughed back slightly. She brought something out of her pocket. Bandages.

“Here, I grabbed these from the table from earlier. I couldn’t sleep so I came down for some water when I noticed you were getting up. I was surprised that you were getting up now,” Acacia laughed slightly and I raised an eyebrow as I took the bandages.

“Why?” I asked and she just shrugged.

“Where are you from?” Acacia asked as I started to bandage my cheek and my shoulder. “You know where everybody’s from here but we don’t know where you are from,” Acacia asked curiously and I finished up my bandaging and looked at her.

“Japan,” I told her with a smile as I walked out of the bathroom and she walked out with me. “But I grew up here. I still know some Japanese,” I told her as we walked over to the couches again and we started in a conversation about the places we were from, about France and about Japan, mostly from what I remembered. Just the places themselves. Nothing about our pasts or anything. I had to admit, it was nice having some girl time. I normally had it with Karin, but getting to know people in the club was pretty cool too.

Just as we were about to start talking on the couches, I noticed a shadow on one of the doors that led outside. Wait, did Griffin stay outside?

“Did Griffin come in at all?” I asked Acacia and she shook her head.

“I don’t think he did. I went to bed when everybody else did,” Acacia put simply and I just nodded. I got up, deciding to be nice, walked over to the glass door and knocked on the door. Griffin jumped slightly and turned his head, his eyes narrowed. I unlocked the door and popped my head out, also noticing the two holes in Griffin’s wings.

“You wanna come in or what?” I put blankly and he just blinked at me.

“Sure,” He murmured. “Thanks,” He simply put as he got up and I moved aside. He slid by me and I closed the door after him. He winced in pain as he moved inside and sat down on one of the couches. His wing hit the actual couch, I think.

“You need help with your wing?” I asked as I moved back to Acacia and sat down beside her.

“No, I’m... fine,” He sighed as he tried to sit himself up but it didn’t work well. I could tell he was struggling and I just looked at Acacia. I could tell what she was thinking. She mouthed to me, as Griffin’s eyes became half closed, “After he falls asleep.” I just nodded and looked back at Griffin.

“You need help on that wing,” I told him and he barely shook his head. God, he was frustrating and he didn’t like help. “Fine, be frustrating,” I sighed, my eyes narrowing slightly as I got up, ignoring his look, and went over and got a glass of water. “I’m trying to be nice, for once, to you, alright?” I asked as I put it down in front of him and he just stared at it and looked the other way. Wow.

“You really don’t like help from people, do you?” I asked bluntly and he didn’t reply. I just sat down beside Acacia again and she just shrugged.

“Amazing how you two can fight so simply,” She whispered and I rolled my eyes.

“He just...” I let out a big gush of air.

“Do you like him?” Acacia whispered in my ear and I leaned back and just stared at her. What the-

“H*** no. He’s such an a**. Besides, he’s rude to everybody especially me. How can he have friends this way? I couldn’t be friends with him if I even tried,” I whispered back and Acacia just giggled. I didn’t see what she saw but this guy just irritated me to no end. He acts like he doesn’t want any friends.

“You two would be a cute couple,” She whispered back and I just stared at her.

“What, are you crazy? I really don’t know what you see,” I put bluntly and she just couldn’t stop giggling.

“Well, if you two didn’t fight all the time, you could end up together,” Acacia giggled and I just rolled my eyes. What was in her head?

“What if I did like him? What would happen then?” I sounding incredulous. I really did sound crazy.

“Well, if you actually did like him and he liked you back, you could both calm each other down, maybe fight still, but not as much, and you both would be nicer people,” Acacia pointed out.

“What, I can’t be nice?” I asked and she just giggled.

“You are right now. You looked like you really wanted to help him, even though he was insisting that you didn’t,” Acacia said and I just blinked.

“Well...” I sighed. “It’s hard to be nice to him when he’s not even trying to respond the same way,” I sighed and her eyes perked up in interest.

“You do like him!” She called me out quietly and I stared at her.

“I’ve never even liked a guy before. If I did, how would I even know?” I asked and she shrugged.

“I don’t know. Isn’t there that whole, “trusting in your heart” thing? I’m kind of clueless too,” She laughed and I rolled my eyes. She just giggled as I tried to understand what was going through her head.

“I wonder... do I...” I left off, whispering to myself. Acacia looked at me, probably wondering what I said. I shook my head to her.

“It’s nothing.” Acacia just nodded her head, acting like I was lying. Whatever. I was clueless. What difference did it all really make?

That’s when I looked over at Griffin and wondered if he was actually asleep. That’s when I started to hear the evenness of breathing coming out of him. That’s when I looked at Acacia and she nodded. I slid the bandages out of my pocket and got up from my seat quietly and Acacia followed. We silently and softly took care of his wings that had the bullet holes in them and patched them up as best as we could without waking him. At some point, I moved his bangs to the side of his face to get a better look at him. He was actually kind of... what was the word, cute?

“Well, that’s the best I can get it. How about you?” I whispered to Acacia and she nodded and we both sat down on the couch. We started to talk again but this time, I could tell we were both tired from what just happened. Eventually we fell asleep, not really paying attention to Griffin’s wings moving to get better elevation.

The sun hit brightly on my eyes, which woke me up almost immediately. It honestly didn’t feel long since I fixed Griffin’s wings and I had just talked to Acacia. That’s when I also noticed that nobody else was up yet. Well, if anybody was going to make breakfast and redo their impression on everybody, it had to be me.

I got up, quickly stretching with my tail scratching behind my ear for me, and moved over to the kitchen. Once I found the Bisquick, pans, bacon, eggs, and fruit, I started to cook up everything that came to mind. Pancakes, bacon, fried eggs, and crepes for those who didn’t like pancakes. Fruit to go on top of that.

I think eventually with all of the smells from the cooking bacon, eggs, and pancakes, I heard murmurs coming from upstairs and people talking. I smirked. That’s also when I heard Acacia waking up too. She was quiet and decided not to bother me and set the table. Once I had the moment to, I got out a bunch of plates out and set them on the island.

“Is there any rare meat in there?” I looked up and saw Sebastian asking from the stairs as he slowly made his way down, making sure to be careful with the arm injury he had from a bullet grazing him deeply. His eyes were slightly puffy, like he had just been crying. I wouldn’t ask but it probably had to do with Karin’s nightmares again.

“Yeah, the bacon,” I said simply with a smile and he just smiled.

“That’ll have to do for now,” He laughed and I just nodded. Sebastian sat down as I put the pancakes, the eggs, and the crepes on the really big plates, along with the fruit in multiple bowls. I saw Karin slowly hopping down the stairs, walking over to Sebastian afterwards and sitting down beside him. He gave a reassuring nod to Karin and she just looked down. They talked quietly for a little bit before Karin addressed me.

“Morning, Akira!” Karin said with a small smile, something obviously bothering her again. I wasn’t going to ask this time.

“Morning,” I said with a smile and looked over at Griffin. He was still asleep as everybody started to come down the stairs, talking amongst each other as they sat down. “Hey, Karin.” Her ears perked up as she drew her attention away from everybody else coming down the stairs.

“Why don’t you go and take a plate of food and wake up Griffin?” I asked and she looked nervously at Griffin before nodding.

She got up from her chair, came over to me as she collected a plate of food, and hopped over to Griffin. I watched her, mostly everybody did, as she waved the plate of food while crouching down in front of him, right under his nose. He slowly woke up and just stared at Karin before taking the plate and giving a small “thank you” nod to her. She smiled and hopped back over to Sebastian, who kissed her on the cheek when she got back.

“Oh no! You didn’t have to do this at all, Akira!” I turned around and saw Colette behind me, looking completely embarrassed that I was doing all of the work. I shook my head with an incredulous look on my face.

“I wanted to. I’m the leader after all,” I told her with a smile and she gave a small smile back.

“Well, at least let me help you with the condiments!” She exclaimed, immediately wanting to help so she started to get out the syrup, whipped cream, powdered sugar, and cutting up all of the fruit. Once I finally finished, there were plates stacked with pancakes, crepes, and rare bacon. I picked them up, I now noticing Griffin sitting beside everybody with his wings folded behind him. He was trying to converse with people, who were all very wary of him and how he would react to certain things. It seemed like it was Karin more that he was trying to converse with, and that pissed Sebastian off.

Once I put the plates on the tables and everything was set up with the condiments, everybody dug in. Acacia didn’t sit down. Instead, she stared at everybody. She didn’t make a comment. All she did was look at us before sitting down, as if we were doing something odd or wrong.

With that, everybody started in on their conversations again and I started in with an apology to Dante with how I acted towards him when Griffin spoke up and everybody quieted down. He noticed it.

“Akira,” Griffin called out from the middle of the dining table, as he was right across from Karin. “Why did you patch up my wings?” Him asking that brought everybody’s eyes to his wings, which were patched so they weren’t bleeding anymore.

“You were being stupid, not letting Acacia and I help you. So we did it anyways when you passed out. You were being an idiot,” I put bluntly and he just blinked and nodded, as if almost it was a “thank you,” as I ripped off a piece of rare bacon from my hand. That started everybody on their plates and conversations again and I had to admit it was nice, having everybody together.

It was finally starting to feel like a club. No... a family.
