Suddenly I heard a distant rumble.
"What's that?" I gasped, looking around for my glasses, they must have fallen off sometime during the encounter. Spotting them a little ways off I dropped to my hands and knees and made my way slowly to them.
"why are you doing that?" the man asked, I heard him grinning.
"Getting my glasses" I replied "and you still haven't answered my question."
I looked back over my shoulder with a glare.
He smiled "Oh, you'll see in a moment."
Finally I reached the spot where my glasses had landed, grabbed them and crammed them on my face. Looking across the landscape I saw what was making the noise. Several people seemed to be in a battle, fighting some pretty grotesque looking creatures. "What on earth?!" I spluttered whirling around to face that obnoxious man. "Come on!" I said urgently, "we have to do something!"
"Why?" he asked, smiling.
"WHY?! Can you see?! They're in trouble!" I was flabbergasted. How could he be so, so detached?
"Keep watching." he replied, the smile seemed to be a permanent fixture.
As I watched the battle unfold my mind played out horrible scenarios, all of them ending with the little group of people slaughtered. "Why won't you help them?" I asked, my numb tone must have amused him.
"it's easier this way" he smirked "I do so hate violence."
"How can you be so cruel?!" I felt nothing but contempt for the coldhearted bastard.
"and why aren't you rushing off to help them yourself? You could go, I'm not keeping you here. . ." his voice trailed off and he just kept looking at me. And as much as I hated him and wanted to reply, I couldn't find the words. . ."maybe," he said softly "it's because you really don't wish to help them, maybe because deep down, you really don't want to run the risk of getting killed for a bunch of strangers" his eyes seemed to glow. I shivered
"Just who the hell are you?"
"Me? Why, I'm you." then everything went black for the second time.
