Where's Big Brother Going?

-Ava-

“Isn’t she beautiful.” My master Andrea asked her friends.

“Yes she is. Why have you kept her hidden away all this time? You should show her off more. I know a lot of Butterflies have a hard time getting past the age of five before they fall to illness.” The women with the red hair said as I looked down at the floor sadly.

“Come now girl smile no one likes to see such a sad face.” Another said and I instantly picked my head up.

“Y-yes Ma’am.” I stuttered quietly and smiled gently towards all them.

“That’s my beautiful butterfly. Now be a dear and go make some tea for us all.” Master Andrea said waving me off.

I bowed a little and some of my hair slid off my shoulder then I walked to the kitchen to make some tea for my master and her friends. When I got into the kitchen my older brother John was finishing cleaning up.

Even though the family that owned us was just into the rich category for money wise the mistress was too cheap to pay for maids. She figured that since John and I were half human we could do the cleaning around here and she would have to pay us.

“Evening big brother.” I said quietly as I lightly closed the door to the kitchen.

“I hate the fact that you have to wear those short frilly maid outfit when the mistress has friends over.” John said not looking up at me. Of course there wasn’t much room to talk for him. He was forced to wear a blue button up shirt black vets and matching black pants and shoes, with his orange hair slicked back, but some of his bangs just didn’t like to stay back and they fell in front of his face.

“If I don’t mistress will scold me.” I said looking down sadly. “Can you help me make the tea please?” I asked.

“Of course.” John smiled and grabbed the kettle and filled it with water and put it on the stove to start heating up the water.

“Big brother…where do you go every night?” I asked him as I went to the cupboard and grabbed some different teas for them to choose from and set them on the tray that John got out for me.

“…I don’t go far I go up to the roof to get some fresh air is all. It’s difficult to stay in this house all the time with the kids pulling my tail and all.” He smiled at me and went and grabbed four cups for the women.

“Can I go up on the roof with you some time?” I asked.

He smiled at me softly but I could see sadness in his eyes. “Sure I’ll take you with me sometime.”

The kettle started whistling and John turned off the stove. He poured the hot water into a fancy teapot as I grabbed some pastries that the mistress taught me how to make a few days ago on the tray with some dollies.

“Did you want me to carry the tray for you?” He asked as he looked at how full the tray was.

“I can do it.” I puffed out my cheeks and tried to pick up the tray.

I glanced over at John to see him smiling at me softly and laugh lightly. “Grab the teapot. I’ll carry the tray.” He said and I did what I was told.

We went into the sunroom and set up the tea for the ladies.

As we walked away I could hear the women talking about John and how much he’s grown. I couldn’t tell but I was always use to John towering over me so it was normal for me, but I guess that happens when someone doesn’t see him every day.

He seemed to have a bored expression on his face like he didn’t want to be here. He seemed a little bit more distant now a days. I didn’t want to ask him but lately he’s been coming how at like four in the morning. So I don’t know if he was falling asleep on the roof or what, but I really wanted to find out.

The mistress tea party lasted till about seven at night. The mistress husband was out on a business trip so she had plenty of time to waist with her girlfriends. John and I had to cook dinner for them first before we could make our own. We at quietly in the kitchen and started cleaning the kitchen before we had to go and clean up after the mistress and her guests.

By the time it was nine I was exhausted and was happy that I didn’t mess up and break something today. I hated breaking things and John taking the blame for it because he didn’t want me to get hurt. After taking a quick shower I was sent to bed.

I laid on my side awake in my bed in a pair of shorts and a tank top. I heard my door open slightly and then close. A few minuets later I heard big brothers window slide open. I quickly sat up in bed and went over to my window to see big brother looking around before heading off somewhere.

I opened my window and jumped out. I wanted to see where he was going. I’ve seen him leave too many times and I wanted to see where he was going. My feet touched the grass. It felt so nice and the air was fresh in the night air. I fluttered my wings and followed him as best as I could.

My wings couldn't carry me that long and I had to touch down. I had never been allowed out of the house before. This was so strange to me. But I was completely lost big brother was too fast for me even with me flying.

"Big brother?" I muttered with tears swelling up in the corner of my eyes.

I was scared and didn't know what was going to come out of the dark allies and get me. "Big Brother!" I yelled.

"What a pretty little butterfly." I heard someone's voice coming from the shadows.

"Can we play with her before we kill her?" Another voice asked as the voices came closer.

I brought my hands up to my chest and started baking away. "Big brother...where are you..." I muttered quickly my hear pounding. Was I going to die? I didn't know how to protect myself.

"Oh and she's an owned butterfly." The first voice said.

"No wonder why she's made it so far in life. She must be so scared... Go on girl run. I enjoy playing with my prey." I could hear his smile as he spoke to me.

My legs were shaking. What do I do? I did all I could do. I gathered up my strength and ran as fast as I could through the cold dark streets. I heard their foot steps behind me as I turned a corner into a dark ally. My eyes couldn't adjust fast enough to the pitch black darkness and I ended up tripping over something.

"Ow..." I cried quietly. May hands, knees, and the top of my feet stung really bad. Tears were trickling down my cheeks and mixing with the sweat that was beading down my face.

I pulled my self up and was able to move myself over into a corner under some wood that was leaning up against one of the buildings and curled up into a ball and tried to stop crying. The people's footsteps got closer and I put my hands over my mouth trying to quiet my sobbing. Was this it? Was I going to die?
