African Killer Bees

If you haven't heard, I've been taking an EMT Basic class this year (Emergency Medical Technician). It's a lot of new information to take in and at the same time it's really interesting since it's being taught by the actual Paramedics and emergency staff here in town. So not only do we have them teaching us what is in the book for the class, we get stories from them of actual emergency calls they've responded to.

One of those stories was about an incident of African Killer Bees that attacked a bunch of people here in town. It started when someone holding a garage sale called their landlord (they lived in an apartment complex) since there were a lot of bees about. They showed up and did what a lot of people would normally do, they sprayed the bees.

Unfortunately this triggered a massive swarm of bees since they were from a nest of Killer Bees. So I'm sure you can imagine the utter chaos that created. Every ambulance in the city responded. Emergency crews were sent from other towns, the fire department, police, etc. Fourteen people had to be taken to the hospital and over 40 total were stung, repeatedly. Fortunately no one died.

Later, when they were working to get rid of the nest, they found one that was about 6'x6' in the attic of the apartment complex where the garage sale had been set up. So they figured there were quite a few bees. Naturally they destroyed it. Killer Bees are too agressive to even consider relocating elsewhere.

Two things about this really stand out for me, the first was finding out where this nest was. It's the apartment complex right across the street from the one I live in. ._. If see a bee... I'm so not spraying, I'm gonna get the hell away from it.

The second is something that makes me think of AnimeArchAngel (aka Trip). One of the people being attacked by the Killer Bees just took off running down the road. So when one of the ambulances was heading towards the scene they saw this dark cloud surrounding someone heading towards them.

Upon getting closer they realized it was bees around the person so instead of getting out of the truck they came to a halt and when the person got close, they opened the back door, grabbed the guy and slammed the door shut and the driver took off. Bees may be fast but they're not THAT fast.

Now even though they got them into the ambulance safely they still had bees all over in their hair and clothing. So the person in the back who had grabbed them, was using a hat to whack the bees on them. They were doing that to kill the bees and get them off of the poor person.

Apparently every time they hit them with the hat they kept yelling... "I'm Sorry! I'm Sorry!" When I heard that, all I could thing was... Omg... it's Trip as an EMT. XD
