Wolves in Our Backyard

Okay, so my friend Katie came to my house over the weekend. And in case you didn't know we live way out in the woods. So Katie wanted to go horseback riding, so we caught my saddle horse and rode her into the front pasture. Katie was riding towards me when we both heard a wolf howl xD I started laughing and asked her if she had heard it to. So I howled back and all of the sudden about ten different wolves howled all around us. We both laughed and thought it was really cool until the pack closest to us started yipping and running towards us. Keep in mind this is at 9:30 PM so we can't see that much because it is dark. Plus the pack is under the cover of a thicket of trees.
So Katie and I are like "oh shit" because a pack might actually get aggressive either towards us or my horse. And these guys were really getting close so I yelled at them and after about a minute they went quiet. I was still picturing them watching us unsaddle my horse from the thicket of the trees but I didn't see anything. After the horse was safely in her pen we went back to howl at them some more now that we could weren't burdened with the horse. I howled once, there were a few distant howls coming from the mountains, and then a closer call coming from a lone wolf by the river to our right.
It was the first time Katie had ever heard a real wolf and I couldn't have been happier to have been the one who was with her on that experience.
Next time I'm going into the mountains to call in this pack again. I'll try to get pictures of the wolves for you guys, from the safety of a tree stand or a good distance away of course if it is a large or aggressive pack.
