She wants me to kill you with my hands.

Making some real progress in Mass Effect now -- went from Lv. 13 to Lv. 21 in one play session yesterday. Some of those sidequests are pretty damn generous with the experience! I'm not complaining, though. Gives me a chance to beef up my biotic powers. Been getting a lot of use out of Lift and Singularity now. Aww yeah.

Irresponsible Captain Tylor movies 1+2 (1994): I was really disappointed with the Tylor movies (and the OVA as a whole, actually). The mood is WAY too serious, which is really bizarre considering how irreverent the main series is. There are some moments of humor, but the movies are otherwise shockingly somber. They have the same characters and the same conflicts, but they just do not feel like Tylor to me -- everything I enjoyed about the series is stripped away.

Gundress (1999): lol, you know a movie sucks and/or is obscure when it doesn't have a Wikipedia page. Anyway, Gundress is famous for two things: 1) Character and mecha designs by Masamune Shirow (he of Ghost in the Shell fame), and 2) This infamously janky animation about halfway through the video. (To be fair, though, it was cleaned up in the version I watched.) Otherwise, Gundress is utterly unremarkable -- the animation sucks, the plot and characters are stupid, and the movie barely even takes advantage of its futuristic setting. Bah.

Barefoot Gen (1983): Barefoot Gen is horrifying in a way that even the most hardcore anti-war movies rarely are. Not to go all film snob on you all, but Francois Truffaut once posited that it's impossible to create an anti-war movie, because war is so visually exciting. Well, I'd dare anyone to be excited by the visuals of the atomic bomb explosion and its immediate aftermath. These are probably the most legitimately terrifying images I have ever seen animated. No matter what I could say about the rest of the movie -- and there are definite weaknesses, in particular the voice acting of the kids -- those images will stay with me for life.

Santa Sangre (1989): Every so often a horror movie will come along that reminds me of why I love the genre so much. Santa Sangre is the kind of movie that is only possible in horror: It's bold, insane and teetering on camp, but it never quite falls overboard. That's part of its charm: Santa Sangre is thoroughly melodramatic and has a ridiculous premise, but it's so sure of itself and at the same time so self-aware that you can't help but be mesmerized. (Or maybe it's just me.) For horror fans, the best way I can describe it is that it's like a Dario Argento movie seen through the eyes of someone even crazier (which is no mean feat; Argento is plenty twisted).
