Open the pig!

Was going to write an anime review yesterday, but instead I stopped being lazy and did my taxes. So that's finally done. Hooray! I'll write something up tomorrow.

The End of Evangelion (1997): Watched this last week but forgot to add it onto the list. Anyway, I hadn't seen this in years; mostly, I remembered all the screwed up parts, but the movie actually ended up being more fucked up than I recalled. Yikes. Hideaki Anno must have been pissed as hell when he made this movie, damn. If Ed Wood is the one movie that will put me in a good mood no matter what, this movie is the one that would instantly depress me. Maybe I should watch this and Ed Wood back-to-back and see what happens.

Neo Tokyo (1989): Pretty good anime anthology movie. My only real problem with it is that all three shorts come off as incomplete to me. They all seem like there is more to tell, but they all just end. But I think the style of each story makes up for that. What you see in this movie are three types of stories and visual styles that you just don't see much today. My favorite is "Construction Cancellation Order", which is about a mousy salaryman who has to stop a bunch of robots who are wasting time and money on a construction project deep in a jungle. It's pretty funny.

Red (2010): Basically a bunch of old folks kicking ass. I'm down with that. I think Helen Mirren is my favorite part of the movie; she's great. Also, only in Hollywood would Mary-Louise Parker be able to get dates with only a bunch of dorks and losers.

Dreamcatcher (2003): I watched because I heard how bad it is, but holy crap, it's even worse than I expected! I think I get what the movie is going for: It's trying to utilize the tongue-in-cheek tone of Stephen King's writing and translate that to the movie, but it's just stupid and awkward instead of funny. Even Morgan Freeman sucks in this movie, and he's God! I mean, come on! And the story is just laughable. The flashback portion is just dumb and boring, and the facepalm I whipped out upon seeing the resolution broke the sound barrier. Just awful. I'd seek out the film stock and take a huge crap on it, but I think the director got there first.

Jason X (2002): Apparently I wasn't done watching stupid horror movies. But at least Jason X is dumb enough to be hilarious. From its very premise ("It's Friday the 13th in space!" and yes, this is literally how the movie was pitched), you know it's going to be a big bag of dumb. So I just sat back and laughed and laughed.

On the queue for this week: Wag the Dog (1997), Dirty Work (1998)
