Mostly wrong because he thinks she looks best without glasses wtfffffffffff I'M NEVER GETTING OVER THIS.
Anyway, I watched the shitty camrip of The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya because I'm a dirty thief I am ludicrously impatient. More thoughts to come in a later post, but I'll say this: I was already planning on buying the movie should it be licensed (and it should be, even if the second season bombs ... which it might because, you know, it sucks and has maybe four good episodes out of 14, only one of which you really need to see to understand Disappearance's story), but actually watching the movie increased my confidence in that decision, like, 10 billionfold.
EDIT: Someone at Bandai has heeded my call and licensed the movie. Yes, yes and YES. Oh, those lucky people in San Francisco and Hawaii.
(P.S. I added some shipping blabber I forgot to write yesterday.)
I knew the movie would be pretty kickass, because I know how awesome the story is, but damn. If this movie were released in American theaters, I would watch it in a heartbeat. And it takes a bit to get me off my lazy ass and into a theater.
So, yes, good movie. Here are some random things I enjoyed about it, plus some odds and ends:
-- While Kyon is dead wrong about Yuki's fashion sense, he is absolutely correct when he suggests -- again -- a ponytail for Haruhi. Not enough to forgive his earlier transgression, mind, but still. He gets some points for that.
-- I love that even in an alternate reality, Itsuki is Haruhi's bitch.
-- Did a good chunk of the Haruhi fandom always consider Kyon to be an asshole? Yeah, he's sarcastic, a bit thickheaded and a bit arrogant and aimless, but I always liked Kyon because he'll admit when he's wrong, and he'll stand up for his friends WITH THE FIRE OF A THOUSAND SUNS. (Which he does in this movie. I love me some fiery!Kyon. <3) Kyon hate seems to have popped out of nowhere, but I'll admit I don't always pay attention to fandom, so it probably always existed.
-- I'm tongue-in-cheek with the whole moe thing about 95 percent of the time ... but seriously Yuki argh. Her story is a heartbreaker. I and many others shit upon the "Endless Eight" arc, but one thing it does right is set up some subtle changes in Yuki that directly feed into the movie's story.
-- Speaking of Yuki being all moe and whatnot, KyoAni totally plays up the eroticism again when Yuki bites Kyon's arm to give him some nanomachines to grant him special abilities. Rawr.
-- I may like Kyon, but alternate!Tsuruya threatening to punch the hell out of Kyon if he bothers Mikuru again is awesome.
-- There's a lot of epic music in this movie. Even Kyon walking gets epic music at one point. (But it makes sense in context.)
-- The original Haruhi Suzumiya OP is used in the movie (the song, not the actual animation). Nostalgia bomb, yikes. Speaking of, it's been four years since Haruhi Suzumiya first came out WTF.
-- I LOL'd at Windows '95 being alternate!Yuki's operating system of choice.
-- Kyon scrunching up in the elevator to get as far away as possible from alternate!Asakura is HILARIOUS.
-- Speaking of alternate!Asakura, SHE IS REALLY CREEPY DEAR GOD AHHHHHHHHHHHHHH.
-- Kyon's ultimate Crowning Moment of Awesome is just as great here as it is in the book. NOBODY FUCKS WITH KYON'S FRIENDS ON HIS WATCH.
-- My one true complaint about the movie: NEEDS MOAR ITSUKI HILARIOUSLY FLIRTING WITH KYON. Actually, Itsuki really gets the shaft in this movie. Poor guy. Although his alternate self is subtly snooty, and it's really funny. Man, my appreciation for Itsuki has grown so much since I first watched Haruhi Suzumiya. Probably because he isn't making BORING FUCKING SPEECHES EVERY FIVE SECONDS.
-- Normally I stay the hell out of shipping wars. Canon relationships are usually good enough for me, and if no such relationship exists, I might support something but not really care enough to speak up about it. But this movie makes it tough to be impartial, especially when you can see Kyon with any of the mains (even Itsuki, if Kyon swung that way, anyway; they would be a hilarious couple). The best part, though, is that none of these relationships ever need to happen, because all the characters would kick ass on their own in life with just their friends to support them.
Haruhi, nutso as she is, is probably destined for great things because of how smart and ambitious she is. Itsuki isn't a dummy; couldn't you see him climbing high in the Organization? Yuki is crazy superpowered and learning to let loose a bit (as much as she can, anyway). Mikuru grows up to be a confident woman. Kyon is the wild card, undeniably smart but lacking in ambition; however, he has the type of personality that will force him to get his act together. Point is, any relationships in this series would just be icing on the cake for these characters -- they'd complement rather than "save" each other. I'd bet on any Haruhi Suzumiya relationship lasting longer than most anime relationships.
Anyway, tl;dr join me in buying this movie when it becomes legally available.
