Don't expect it to tango; it has a broken back.

I don't think the movies I watched this week could be more different, haha. And be sure to check out the updated top 25 on the next page!

LOL, and apparently I forgot to update the top 25 list last week. Oops! Well, that just means more movies making it onto there this week.

Re-Animator (1985): If horror goes into weird gross out mode, then I would much rather it be like Re-Animator -- which has a wicked, bizarre sense of humor to it, even though it doesn't really outright mock itself -- than endlessly morose garbage. This movie somehow plays its story straight while also having a sense of humor; I have no idea how that is possible, but there you go. (Basically it's about a doctor who has perfected a potion to re-animate the dead -- they become sort of like zombies, except they don't need to feed on human flesh.) The last 20 minutes or so are some of the most entertaining horror I've seen in a while.

Summer Wars (2009): I enjoyed it a lot, but I think it's more a very entertaining movie than a game-changing anime like how some people view it. I do wish I had been able to see this in a theater, though; this is a perfect summer blockbuster type of movie. I'd pay $8 to see this in a theater in a heartbeat. It would be worth it for the visuals alone, because they're spectacular. The story is fun but really just OK; the social networking aspect is hyped up, but I honestly don't think it's really that different than the hackers paradise worlds you see in a lot of like-minded science-fiction movies -- it's just more relevant now because the Internet is such an integral part of many people's lives. Not to knock the movie too much, though, because I think it's worth seeing for any fan of animation. But I think I prefer The Girl Who Leapt through Time from the same director ... I'd have to watch it again to be sure.

The Changeling (1980): Kind of a plodding first half with hokey scares, but it gets much more intense by the midpoint, even if the story is kind of unbelievable lol. (And not just because of the supernatural aspects. :p) It's also notable for being a horror movie that focuses on a couple of older, mostly intelligent folks rather than horny teenagers, so the movie has some merit there as well.

On the queue for this week: Miyazaki movies in whatever order they arrive from Netflix.
