Before:
It was a nice day. Stayed up until midnight doing schoolwork, went to bed, woke up at 2:30AM and hit the road at 3:00 in our borrowed motor-home, all the way from the coast of California to the desert of Nevada. Little brother passed out in the back, and I finally got to sit up front, which was nice~ It reminds me of when I've flown in helicopters, there's just that huge window, that gives you a different view of the road from your height, making you feel a wee bit superior to everyone else. >.>;
Around 4:00AM...the motor-home breaks down. In the middle of no where. While it's still dark. No phone service, etc. Long story short, Dad finally gets it running again two hours later and we're on the road once more.
We finally get to the races around 11:00/12:00ish, set up camp, make sandwiches real quick, check in with some friends that help put on the races, and then rush to the pits, to where we're crew members (if you didn't know, Dad's an airplane mechanic and does a lot of work on WWII era warbirds). This year, we were on the crew of the beautiful P-51 Mustangs Speedball Alice and Sawbones (pictures to follow) and my dad was recruited to also be on the reserve crews for Voodoo, Miss America,Merlin's Magic, and Archimedes. (Voodoo and Miss America are my favourite Mustangs aside from The Grim Reaper).
Long story short, we checked with the different pits, watched the unlimited race, then headed off to watch the speed race... I'm sure y'all know the rest. I'll just say that all I could do was grab my little brother and shield him the best I could while watching the Galloping Ghost.
What really happened: Something in her tail snapped and she lost and elevator. We thought Jimmy was going to pull her out, but then she suddenly went vertical, do a Split-S, then a half-circle, and then dive. We thought she hit the Grand-stands at first, but thank God it was just the boxes (still bad, but not as bad as the grandstands).
My family is fine. The only person who got injured was when some of the shrapnel hit my arm, but everything is fine. Just some of our friends are missing.
We stayed in the pits, taking main refuge in the pits of Merlin's Magic and Voodoo as we waited for everything to calm down, and trying to gather as much information as possible.
And then on the way home, two of our tires blew. And then right as we got to our driveway, the battery died..while we were in the middle of the road. >.>;; Yeeeah, finally got home at 12:00, to no electricity~
