Keir was in a less then happy mood. But, then again, Keir was always like that. Maybe it had something to do with Elani's behavior. She was bouncing around, babbling her head off about her latest crush while they walked to school.
"Anyways," she was saying, "He smiled at me the other day!"
Keir tuned his sister out as she gushed about the guy. Sure, it was rude, but he didn't really care. He had better things to think about.
...Like where he was going to stay tonight. He'd been with the current family for about a week. Time to move on. Always better to leave before they were totally sick and be welcomed back again, then to stay for a long time and never come back. Keir learned that the hard way.
He sighed and pulled a cigarette out. He lit it, and took a deep drag.
"That's gonna kill you some day, you know that right?" Elani said, suddenly serious. Keir shrugged,
"Don't care." He said quietly, "I'll die someday anyway, right?"
Elani looked her brother, concerned. She's never admit to anyone, but his life style worried her. Always moving, not really caring about anything. He lacked the fire of life, and was almost wasting away in front of her.
"Hey!" He said, flashing his signature smirk, the one that girls giggled about together in hallways, "Why so serious suddenly?"
Elani shrugged,
"I'm just thinking bout stuff..." she said. Keir's smirk widened by a fraction of an inch.
"I didn't know you could think, Lay-Lay!" he exclaimed loudly.
Elani shot him her most evil glare,
"I can think!" she said, "And don't call me Lay-Lay! OK, Keir-bear?"
Keir shot a glare at his sister.
"That doesn't even rhyme dummy!"
Elani looked over his shoulder and waved suddenly.
"Hi Nicole!" she shouted. Right in his ear. Keir cringed,
"Lay-Lay!" He complained. But the girl was gone already, running over to her friend.
