Clutter

Ladies and gentlemen, Billy Joel.

So today my dad and I had to help my grandmother with moving. To go into more detail, my grandmother's mind is unfortunately shot. And it's progressed to a point where she had to be moved from the assisted living section of the old folks' home she's in to the wing that more equipped for handling tougher cases, for lack of a better term. The actual move was yesterday and my dad and I didn't really have any part in it. That part was handled by my aunt and some of the people who work at the home.

My grandmother's new room is a lot smaller than her old one. So what my dad and I had to help do today was figure out what stuff to take for ourselves and what stuff we could just donate to one of those outfits that sell second-hand merchandise. I ended up taking a few things for myself. Just a few things that belonged to my late grandfather, such as a patch from his old army uniform. But during this whole process, my aunt mentioned to me how frightening it is at how much stuff a person can accumulate over the years.

That thought sort of stuck with me over the course of the afternoon. Especially when I got home right after helping with this sorting. I had to clean out the box I had planned to put my grandfather's army patch in to make room. A lot of the stuff in there was old ticket stubs from movies I had seen over the years, which I had kept for reasons I don't entirely remember. There a few other items in that box that weren't really worth holding onto as well, and all of it was thrown out. That's just sort of how I am, I guess. Both my dad and I have always been packrats.

In fact over the last couple of months I've had to get rid of some stuff. Some of your reading may remember when I asked for suggestions on what to do with my old issues of Shonen Jump. I also ended up donating some of the old manga that I don't read anymore to my town's library a few weeks ago because I was in need to shelf space. But I think my main point to this little tangent is that sooner or later we all end up with more stuff than we know what to do with. Every now and then we all get items we think we want at the time and then realize we never use years later. Heck, I still have a few DVDs that I no longer really want anymore and could probably stand to get rid of.

So anyway, that was just a little observation about life that I made today. Thought it might be worth sharing to some of you reading. I hope everyone else is having a good weekend.
