Background:
Mikes parents died when he was a teenager and so he got a job and paid his way through school and through college, even though his parents friends adopted him into their family. When he was eighteen his adoptive parents also died, leaving him to raise their daughter who is five years younger than himself. After being thrown out of their house they moved into the bottom floor of a house that was being rented out near Alice and Andy. Mike got a job teaching at the local high school.
