Voice of Reason

In a normal American high school in New York City there was a girl named Jessica. She was one of those over makeup using, high society, rich girls, who thinks they are better then everyone.(not all rich girls are like this) She moved around a lot in her childhood because of her dad not wanting her to be restricted to any one culture. But now she was in New York Consolidated High School(NYCHS) for good. So the first thing she did when she got to the school was look for a lackey. There was a new girl in school from Ohio. She was a real shy girl who stayed to herself. ‘Perfect’ though Jessica. She went up to the girl and said, “Hi,” In a really sweet high up tone, “I’m Jessica. What’s your name?”
The girl was at her desk doing homework. She looked up shyly and said, “Michel.”
“Okay, Mickey.” she said and before Michel could correct her she said, “I’m throwing a party at my house, do you want to help me plan it?” she asked. Once again before Michel could respond she said, “Don’t answer, if you just say yes, and act excited because you have been invited to help, you’ll fit in much better.” So with that Michel was pulled into being a lackey. She clapped, she helped, she waited, she was Jessica’s number one lackey. Jessica had gotten a lot more lackey’s by the end of the year. It was time to elect a junior prom queen and Jessica was of course on the ballet. Michel was the one Jessica had gotten do all the posters and gather votes. And one day while Michel was doing it, she heard a voice in her head, “You know, you don’t have to do this.” it said.
‘She wants me too though. And life is a lot easier this way.’ though Michel.
“True, it is easier. But are you happy? I mean, what is the point in fitting in if it makes you sad?” asked the voice.
While Michel stopped for a second to talk in her head with the voice, Jessica noticed that she had stopped. Jessica also noticed that Michel’s gray eye’s were turning blue and cheering up.
“Mickey? What’s wrong?” asked Jessica. ‘I have to get her back to work. I cant lose this election.’ thought Jessica.
“Can I take a break? I have something I want to do.” said Mickey. All the other lackey’s nearby gasped.
‘I need to fix this. This girl is my number one lackey. I cant have everyone see her go rouge.’ thought Jessica. “Of course not. You can do it later. Right now we need to win this election remember?” she said sweetly.
“Why do you have to do it though. She can do some work too. And it should be your choice. Michel, pick what you want to do. If you do want to do this, then go ahead. But if you want to go then go.” said the voice in her head.
“I have somewhere I need to go though.” said Michel.
“Mickey, don’t make a scene out of this. Just get back to work.” said Michel with a sigh.
Mickey thought for a second then said, “No.” lightly.
Everyone gasped. “WHAT!?! WHAT DID YOU SAY!?!” asked Jessica.
“I said no. I don’t have to do this. I would much rather go home and eat some cake. I don’t need to diet for you. And I don’t need to stay here. I want to go home and see my mom. She has been sick recently and I want to take care of her.” said Michel.
“Mickey, did you hear what I said. You cant-” and then Jessica was cut off by Michel saying “One, my name isn’t Mickey. It’s Michel. Second, I can do what I please.” she said as she walked away. Jessica was stunned. All of Jessica’s lackey’s and Jessica shunned Michel from that day forward. But she didn’t mind. With her eye’s blue with happiness and her light brown hair shinning with hope she walked away from Jessica. As she left she heard the voice one last time, “Be yourself. Be who you want to be. Never let anyone tell you who you are or what to be. It’s your choice.” Over the next week she made lots of new friends but she never told anyone about the voice in her head. She kept that her little secret. One day though, a nice boy from her class named Jacob, who had been her friend for about a month now asked, “Hey Michel, back then when you broke away from Jessica’s group, what gave you the courage?”
“You wouldn’t believe me if I told you, and if you did, you would think I’m crazy.” she said with a giggle.
“Well, I still want to know. That day you changed. You became free spirited and you don’t care what others think. I want to know what gave you that freedom.” he said.
“To be truthful. That day I heard a voice in my head. It told me I didn’t have to be by her side. It said I had a choice. It told me to do what I wanted to do. She told me to be myself if I wanted to. And I decided, to listen. You must think I’m crazy now huh?” asked Michel.
“I believe you, and I don’t think your crazy. That voice, I believe its called the voice of reason. They say that not everyone hears it but its always there. You just have to listen. Looks like you did.” he said with a smile.
“How do you know that?” asked Michel while smiling.
“There is an old folk story about it. There was an evil king ruler who controlled his subjects with an iron fist and threatened banishment or even death to those who disobeyed. Then one day a young man heard the voice of reason say, ‘This man isn’t a good king. No one likes him. He is just plain cruel. Why should you listen. It should be your choice who you obey.’ It talked to him more that day and over the next few weeks he lead a rebellion against the king. Then everyone was free and they made him the king. The story reminds me a bit of what happened to you so I had to ask.” said Jacob while smiling.
“Really? It does sound a bit like my story. Jessica was an mean ruler with an iron fist. But I haven’t become king, I mean queen.” said Michel.
“True, but you never know.” he said with a laugh. That moment an announcement came over the intercom.
“The results for the king and queen of the Junior Class Prom are in. The king is Jacob Ronal and the queen is…Michel Wesley!” said the man over the intercom.
“See, I told you.” said Jacob with a laugh.
“I guess your right. It really is the same.” she said with a laugh. “Hey wait a minute.” she said as she turned red. She had just realized that the two of them were to be the prom queen and king.
She noticed that he was blushing too and he said with a laugh, ‘Well technically it does say he gets married afterwards too so I guess it really is the same. Just on a more minor scale.”
“Yah.” she said with a laugh.
At that moment they both heard the voice in their head, “By the way that legend is a true event that happened in Europe along time ago.”
“What-” Jacob was about to say something but Michel cut him off by saying, “Think it don’t say it.”
“Ok.” he said. ‘What are you doing here voice of reason?’ he though.
“I’m always here remember? I just decided to talk to someone who knew who I was.” said the voice with a laugh.
‘You sound closer than last time. Voice, do you have a real body?’ thought Michel. By this point it was a three way conversation in their mind.
“Yes I do. Good Observation. I’m a 9th grader here at the moment.” said the voice happily.
‘Well that explains why I could tell you were a girls voice. Because you’re a girl right now.’ thought Jacob.
‘Why wouldn’t you be able to tell if she was a girl or boy?’ thought Michel.
‘In the story it said that the voice was neither a male or female voice.’ thought Jacob.
‘O.’ though Michel. ‘So who are you?” Michel asked.
“You’ll have to guess.” said the voice with a laugh as it left.
On the day of prom they saw a freshman who had volunteered as help watching them with a giggle. After they were made prom king and queen she walked up and said, “Congratulations.” at the sound of her voice they both said, “Voice of reason.”
“Yep.” she said with a giggle as she walked off. “Seeya at school.” they heard her say in their heads after she was gone.
