Pokemon Jukebox! - Deoxys Battle Theme

Ah, this Pokemon. This theme.

I had to search all through this world, because I thought that Darkarax had done a post on this Pokemon and if he hadn't I was going to suggest it, but it's there, all the way at the beginning, and it was a wonderful tribute to another one of my favorite legendaries. But we're not here to talk about Deoxys, we're here to talk about Deoxys's battle theme!!

So Deoxys is an event only legendary with four different forms that can be found in FireRed, LeafGreen, and Emerald. It was also the first legendary to have an exclusive battle theme.

First, I'm just gonna say that I love the beginning. The combination of church bells and digital noises has such a cool and somewhat creepy feeling. The digital sounds continue throughout the song to be a really interesting counter-melody that keeps the fast pace. The main melody is fun as well, and while it suffers from the same-sound syndrome of the GBA games (limited sound options cause many of the tracks from RSE/FRLG to have similar sounds, at least in my opinion), the melody itself is so different from other tracks that it gives the whole song a different feel. I'm also very impressed at how realistic the bass sounds. While it seems like a very odd instrument to put in, the bass actually really helps give a deep background sound to contrast the high-pitched melodies. In general, this is an action-packed song that gives a definite out-of-this-world feel which to me fits Deoxys perfectly.

Unfortunately, this song has yet to be used in a game outside its original (ahem, NINTENDO. RSE REMAKES. NOW. Thanks~). I'd really love to see this in a Smash Bros game. Seriously, if the wild Pokemon battle from RSE could get chosen, why can't this? But, since there is no official remix of this song, we get two fan remixes! Yay!!

Both remixes today are from PokeRemixStudio (because I'm a cheater), so I chose the one I liked less of the two to look at first. This is still a good remix, and it definitely takes care of the same-sound symptom of the original. The beginning and the end both sound really cool in headphones. My one complaint is the sound at :57 sounds really off to me...It just sounds a bit honky and doesn't exactly fit with the smooth, alien digitals of the rest of this song. Overall, it's a bit grainy, but still sounds nice to listen to.

Ah. Here we go. I love this one. I actually really like the small tidbit at the beginning. It actually sets up a story for this song. It also has a much more aggressive feel to it that actually suggests an attack as opposed to just a battle. There aren't any sound problems here: everything sounds like it fits. This remix also sounds fuller to me. I also like how the bass isn't really apparent, but when you do listen for it, it actually sounds really intense and almost threatening. Like I said, this whole song sounds a lot more threatening than the original and the first remix. PokeRemixStudio definitely improved with this one. This was actually the first of his/her/its remixes I ever heard, and I fell in love immediately.

So there you have it, Deoxys's Battle Theme! It feels great to do a battle theme again! Until next time, ciao~!
