Legendary PKMN of the Week 9

Grab your scuba gear and get in your mini-sub, because it’s time for another special edition of Legendary Pokemon of the Week. As I mentioned last week, three of my favorite Legendary Pokemon are all Pokemon that could be considered guardians of the sea. And so to continue this little three-week event, I’m going to talk about the Pokemon that’s said to be the creator of the ocean itself, Kyogre.

Kyogre is actually the very reason why I decided to play Pokemon Sapphire. Though at the time I didn’t know anything about this mighty leviathan, not even its name. I ended up learning about Kyogre through playing the game. Anyway, Kyogre is one of the more mythical Legendary Pokemon. It is said that Kyogre is the very creator of the sea itself. It also has the power to expand the sea by causing massive rainstorms, but more on that in a bit.

Hangout: Throughout the games, Kyogre has had a few locations where it could be found and captured. In Sapphire, Kyogre can be found within the Cave of Origin after Team Aqua has awakened it. There’s not much in the cave except for some wild Zubat, Golbat, and Sableye. I suppose it could be used for training purposes, but other than that there isn’t much reason to come back. Although one time I did go to the innermost part of the cave to hatch a Pichu egg for some reason, why I don’t remember.

In Emerald, Kyogre can be found in a place called the Marine Cave after beating the Elite Four. The cave jumps around between four different water routes, and once Kyogre is captured the cave disappears. In HeartGold, Kyogre appears in the Embedded Tower in Johto after defeating Red and obtaining the Blue Orb. I guess Kyogre’s appearance in HeartGold is to act as sort of a counterbalance to Ho-Oh. One way to look at it could be that Ho-Oh could be the hero that swoops in and stops Kyogre if it goes on a rampage (which Ho-Oh could theoretically do with the right moves).

Signature Ability: Kyogre and its two fellow members of the Weather Trio were introduced at the same time Pokemon Abilities were added to the game. And Kyogre’s Ability is the very power it uses to expand the sea, Drizzle. Drizzle is basically an enhanced form of the move, Rain Dance, in which it creates a downpour of rain that last for the entire battle. Unless of course a move like Hail or Sandstorm is used. With the effect of the rain in play, the Electric-type move, Thunder, is given deadly accuracy. I should note that Kyogre is able to learn Thunder (which actually makes sense), so that combined with Drizzle and a powerful Special Attack stat makes Kyogre the strongest Water Pokemon in the game.

Team Aqua: Ruby and Sapphire are the very first Pokemon games where the mascot Legendary Pokemon played a central role in the evil plans of the game’s villainous team. So because of that I’m going to end this post by talking about the evil organization that sought to use the power of Kyogre, Team Aqua. Team Aqua and their leader, Archie (who’s name just happens to also start with an A), wish to use Kyogre’s power to expand the sea and make the planet almost a hundred percent water, thus creating more habitats for aquatic Pokemon. Now, let’s stop and think about this plan for a moment. Sure, Team Aqua’s plan would make more homes for Water Pokemon, but they’ve seemed to overlook the fact that flooding the planet would kill several people because HUMANS CAN’T LIVE UNDERWATER!

Now, I guess Team Aqua and Archie have good intentions, but their plans don’t seem to benefit the human race very much. At least the plan of Team Aqua’s counterpart, Team Magma, would still leave much of the human population alive since their goal is to expand the land. But then with Team Magma, the planet would probably be mostly desert, the lives of several farmers would be ruined, water would become scarce, and it’d just be hot. Either way, the human race is pretty much doomed; it’s just the difference between a quick death and a slow one. I mean when you get down to it, both plans are pretty insane.

Anyway, getting back to Archie and Team Aqua, not only is their plan insane but they made a major mistake in pulling it off. I don’t know if Archie screwed up the translation of an ancient tablet, but he used the wrong colored orb to awaken Kyogre. The Blue Orb is supposed to theoretically awaken and control Kyogre. All the Red Orb did was awaken Kyogre and tick it off. I mean you’d think it’d be pretty obvious which orb to use. Kyogre’s blue, there’s a Blue Orb; it’s not rocket science.

That pretty much wraps it up for this week. Next week I’ll be finishing up this little three-week event by talking about the final Guardian of the Sea, and I think it should be pretty obvious which Pokemon that is. If you still can’t figure it out, it was the star of the second movie. Until next time then.
