Interesting Specimen: Golurk

I ran across the Pokemon for this week’s Interesting Specimen post while looking for Pokemon to use in a fanfic. Presenting two of the fifth generation’s unique Ghost Pokemon, Golett and its evolved form, Golurk.

At first I thought these two Pokemon were supposed to be like haunted suits of armor. But after reading their Pokedex entries I found out that they’re actually a type of robot created by an ancient civilization. Not the first time I’ve talked about Pokemon that have been created by humans, but it is the first created by ancient humans (plus Golett and Golurk are essentially robots and I do love robots). The one thing that surprised about Golett and Golurk was their typing. Their Ghost-type makes sense, as some sort of otherworldly energy powers them, but being robots I thought they would be of the Steel-type. Instead they’re Ground-types, but I guess it makes some sense since Golett and Golurk were made during ancient times (plus they are based on the Jewish legend of the golem, which was made of clay).

In the Games: In Pokemon Black and White, Golett can be found at the Dragonspiral Tower, but you have to evolve it to get Golurk. In Black 2 and White 2 it’s the other way around, with Golurk being found at the Dragonspiral Tower and in Victory Road and Golett being found nowhere. So the only way to get Golett in Black 2 and White 2 is to trade or breed Golurk, which requires a Ditto, as Golett and Golurk are genderless (because they’re essentially robots). Golett and Golurk come with three different Abilities, one that’s really good, one that’s really bad, and one that’s just okay. I’ll start with the okay Ability first.

Golett and Golurk’s fairly decent Ability is No Guard. No Guard allows for Golett and Golurk’s moves to have one hundred percent accuracy, but also gives the opponent’s moves one hundred percent accuracy too. Good if the Golett or Golurk is using Dynamicpunch I guess, but bad if the opponent has moves like Sheer Cold. At least I think that’s how this Ability works. It’s not an Ability I’m really familiar with, so feel free to correct me if I’m wrong.

Golett and Golurk’s really bad Ability is known as Klutz. Klutz does not allow for Golett and Golurk to use the effects of any hold items except for items such as Exp. Share and Macho Brace, so it’s more or less useless. Now for Golett and Golurk’s really good Ability, Iron Fist. Iron Fist increases the power of punching move by twenty percent. This is the perfect for Golett and Golurk since they’re able to use all sorts of punching moves like Shadow Punch and Ice Punch. To find the Golett or Golurk with the right Ability in the wild, I suggest using a Pokemon that has Trace for its Ability.

Evolution: At level forty-three, Golett evolves into the nine-foot colossus that is Golurk. After evolving, Golurk becomes capable of flight by retracting its legs, and if necessary its hands, into its body. Thus allowing it to fly through the air with a form of rocket propulsion. You know, I’ve seen this type of robot flight somewhere before, but I can’t place where. Anyway, because of this trait, Golurk is able to learn the HM move, Fly.

So that pretty much wraps it up for this week. Next week I’ll be talking about a Pokemon from generation one, so stay tuned.
