Lost

Celsius

I walked away from RaXi silent and towards them again. Nefer looked hurt. Maxwell looked tired. Origin was adamant at best, and Udinie shook her head sharply at me. I didn’t say a word and neither did they. We all just shared the mutual look that appeared.

“You can’t deny your duty Celsius,” Maxwell sighed somewhat threateningly and at the same time not.

I stared back at him defiantly. I would find a way to be free from this work. I was sick of it all. I hate it all. I would find a way out. But for now, I could hold them back by the pact I had just made. I glared at each of them, and each of them gave a different look back. Udinie merely glared back. Origin and Maxwell sighed. But what hurt me the most was the look Nefer was giving me. His eyes were angled down at the floor instead of up, and they were clouded slightly black.

“Celsius…why….Celsius….” Nefer said. There was a tone to it that made my stomach twitch. I wanted to slap him or freeze him or do something to make him stop saying my name like that.

“SHUT UP NEFER!” I yelled. “I’M IN PACT! I CAN NOT GO WITH YOU!”

Nefer remained silent and continued to keep his gaze down. I expected him to look up and laugh like he always did. I expected him to say some crude joke and laugh at it. I had expected him to but he didn’t. I shook my head sharply and repeated it.

“I am in a pact. I can’t go with you. I am bound by my pact,” I said crisply.

“In truth you are now,” Udinie answered. “There is no denying that, and yet we all must question if your chose was right in this matter. Our duty is to no one but Karlan’s Descendant, and yet you split that now. I find it disgusting.”

“SHUT UP SEA-WITCH!” I glared. “I don’t want to hear it from you who killed her own sister!”

“I….did…..not….kill her,” Udinie glared. “And you had better hush your own mouth Ice Demon. WE are here for work not to see your childish attempts to run away from something you were created to do.”

“We made pacts centuries ago!” I yelled. “We were created to make pacts and nourish the land! That is our job! I have just make a pact!”

“Wrong,” Udinie answered. “Our job was to protect the Karlan Tree and ensure its life. Our obligation is held now that we have no pact, and yet you run straight away from that like a child!”

“I AM NOT CHILD! I AM NOT THAT PACTMAKER!” I yelled.

“You are ignoring your duties! You are worse than that pactmaker!” Udinie continued to scold.

“Both of you, be silent or I will deal with you youngins myself,” Maxwell said crossing his arms.

Udinie made a ‘humf’ sound, crossed her arms, and averted her eyes upwards.

“Grandpa Maxwell saves your hide again Dog Breath,” she commented darkly but then fell silent and didn’t say anymore.

I glared but then turned my attention back to Nefer, Maxwell, and Origin. Origin sighed and turned around.

“Maxwell…” he said sharply. “Did you feel that?”

“Indeed others are breaking their pacts,” Maxwell answered. “We will leave you for now Celsius, but when your pact is done, we will come again.”

I glared but nodded.

Udinie, Maxwell, and Origin began walking away, but Nefer stayed and stared at me silently. I couldn’t help but soften my features around him, and even doing that irritated me. I glowered at him harshly.

“Go away Nefer,” I glared. “Go away I don’t ever want to see you ever again. I hate this. I hate you! I hate all of you doing this to me! GO AWAY!”

The memories that flooded me of Nefer’s constant following ran through me. He had been there when I had run away from Kratos’s side after the tree had died. He had been with me through it all and had never questioned me. He had simply remained silent and followed me. How had…I missed it? And yet I was telling him to go away….I wanted him to go away….I wanted to be free but…..was……I couldn’t….was it really…..

“I’ll go away,” Nefer said quietly, and he turned and started walking towards where the others had left.

“Nefer!” I said before I could even think of why I had said it. “Nefer….”

Nefer stopped and turned.

“We went through a lot in these years…” he started. “Thanks for the memories Celsius….and good bye….”

“NEFER COME BACK!” I yelled, but he continued walking.

I felt tears run down my face and freeze on my cheeks once more. Nefer had been my traveling partner. He had always sided with me…always….and….I had taken him for granted….and he was going…

“NEFER!” I yelled.

Nefer silently turned once more. I felt something jump in me. I wanted to run straight up to him, but something held me back. I didn’t move and remained silent. Nefer nodded a bit with a solemn expression.

Nefer’s expression didn’t change but he stepped forwards before I had time to react and embraced my around the shoulders. I couldn’t move. It was as if someone had frozen ME. The shock that was running through me even stopped my breathing.

“I’m sorry….Celsius,” Nefer said sadly. “I won’t limit you..but I can’t wander with you any more…I have work…to do….but when you find whatever you are looking for….freedom or something more…when you find yourself….come back to us…..please…come back to me…..”

“Nefer come with me! We can be free together! I promise!” I said not believing my own words.

“Celsius,” Nefer laughed and his monkey features became even more present than usual. “We both know that is a lie..you can't lie to the prankster's lesser summon...…I’ll see you again dear…bye for now…”

He turned again and walked away for the last time.

“NEFER! NEFER NEFER COME BACK!” I yelled, but he continued walking….far away…to where I could not follow. I stood there shaking a bit and then felt the silence again.
