Today I'm going to recommend a book, or more to the point an author.
The book is American Gods by Neil Gaiman. It is an awesome modern fantasy that I think really shows Gaiman's skills, it's also cheaper than trying to buy all of Sandman.
Gaiman is one of the most inventive writers I've had the pleasure of reading. All the books I've read had me at the first page. Many of you might of seen the movie Coraline, which is based off of his book. I highly recommend picking up and of his books and/or graphic novels.
