Sighing heavily, I sank into my desk chair, eyeing the stack of paper work on my desk with displeasure. Today was turning out to be a horrible day, the kind where nothing went right. My alarm never went off this morning, so I overslept. Because of that, I was nearly late for work and didn’t have time to eat breakfast. I started getting to work on the pile when I heard an explosion coming from out in the hallway, along with a shout from Ed. Frustrated, I went out to see what problem the shrimp had caused this time.
“What the heck happened?” I asked, taking in a soot covered Ed, smoke curling against the walls. Ed stood there dumbfounded.
“I don’t know!” he replied. “I was just bringing this lady to your office, she said she knew you and needed to see you. Then something exploded out of nowhere.
“Oh really? Then where is this mystery woman, hmmm?”
“I’m right here.”
I spun around to see who this mystery woman was that had caused all this chaos, and froze. Standing before me was a tall, athletic woman with long blond hair and blue-green eyes. “Nikki?”
“Glad to see you still remember my name. Considering you never came back to visit like you promised. It’s been years now, how is my old friend doing?” Nikki questioned me.
“Fine,” I replied shortly. Seeing Nikki here was a huge shock. I never thought I would see her again. Gesturing to the mess with my arm I asked, “So how exactly did this happen?”
“I’m not exactly sure. I was just following that kid, he said he knew where you were, when something exploded. Made quite the mess though, hmm.”
I sighed. “This is just like you. You have horrible luck, you know that. Just like the last time we went out. I leave you alone for five minutes, and come back to see the table has caught on fire. You didn’t have an answer for that either,” I told her with a smirk.
“Hey, it’s not my fault, I’m just accident prone! You know that. But speaking of dinner, how bought we go out tonight, my treat. When do you get off work?”
“I’m not so sure that’s a good idea, with your track record. How many of your dates have ended up in the hospital?” I teased.
“Oh come on. Besides, I owe you for this mess, and you owe me for never coming to visit like you promised.”
With a groan, I gave in. I told her what time I got off work and we agreed to meet right outside the building. She left to spend the day shopping, and I headed back to my desk. I ordered the shrimp to clean up the mess, since he was with Nikki when whatever went off. It really had been a long time since we had seen each other, years. We had known each other as kids and were good friends, despite Nikki contagious bad luck. I had gone back to visit her a few times when I first joined the military, but less and less as time passed.
After many long, and mentally painful, hours, I managed to get through the majority of the horrid pile. I decided to call it quits, it was nearly time to meet Nikki anyway. I headed out of the office to our meeting spot. I saw that Nikki was already there, waiting. With a heavy sigh I walked over to her, hoping that there wouldn’t be as much damage that usually occurred when I was with her.
“I thought you said you were going to go shopping. Don’t tell me you spent the whole day without buying anything,” I questioned.
“Absolutely not. I bought lots of cool new outfits, and I found some awesome blue and silver earrings too. I dropped them off at my hotel before meeting you here. How was work?”
“Fine,” I replied. “Have you thought of anyplace in particular you would like to eat, or should I recommend something?”
“Yep. While I was shopping I found this really cool sushi place. The sushi looked so cool! They shaped some of into neat things, like dragons.”
My eyebrow twitched. “You want to try sushi because it looked cute? You do know what sushi is, right?” I asked.
“Of course I know what it is! It’s fish, cute fish. And I want to try it. This way!”
With a sigh I gave in and followed Nikki to where ever this mystery sushi shop was. When we arrived she marched right in and sat next to the counter, wanting to watch the sushi being made.
“I’m surprised you chose sushi. I would have thought you would have chosen someplace with tacos, I thought you liked those,” I said to her.
“I do like tacos. But I also love tuna, which is fish. And so I wanted to try sushi, to see if I like it as well.”
“I see. And how are your brothers doing?” I asked while we ordered. I chose the shrimp roles, while she chose the variety pack, shaped like a dragon.
“They’re fine, still in school. Who was that kid I met this morning. I didn’t know you had any students.”
“The shrimp? No, Ed isn’t a student. He’s a soldier, an alchemist,” I answered. “How are your knees doing? You haven’t reinjured them while I was gone, did you?” I asked while we ate our rolls.
“No. You know, if you had visited like you had promised, you would already know all of this,” she scolded me.
“You could have always called,” I retorted.
“I don’t like talking on the phone, and you know that.”
I sighed. “I’m going to use the restroom real quick. Try not to destroy anything while I’m gone,” I teased, smirking.
“Hey! That only happened once!”
Chuckling, I left her. When I returned I was relieved to see no damage or flames anywhere nearby. I sat back down and quickly ate my last few rolls without looking at them. Bad idea. Suddenly my mouth was in pain and on fire. I snatched my glass of water and downed it, but it didn’t do me much good. Nikki noticed and begun to panic, not knowing what was wrong. She shoved her glass towards me, and I downed that as well. How did I end up with wasabi on my rolls? There wasn’t any on any of the other rolls, and I didn’t add any.
“Nikki,” I choked out once the heat had gone down a bit. “Why did you add wasabi to my sushi?”
“Wasabi, what is, no! While you were gone I noticed that there was some of that green stuff you liked, guacamole, that avocado stuff. You ate a bunch of it the last time we were together. Do you not like it anymore?”
I glared at her. My mouth was no longer on fire, but felt like it had been burned raw. “That wasn’t guacamole!” I hissed at her. “That was wasabi, which is extremely spicy! Why did you put it on my roles?”
“Oh. I thought it was that guacamole you liked, so I thought I would surprise you. I put some on the bottom of your roles. I’m sorry. Are you all right?”
I coughed. “I’ll be fine. But I think I’ve had enough sushi for awhile.” My mouth was still sore.
“I agree, how about we go someplace else now?” She asked, smiling.
“Sure. Chocolate cake is still your favorite dessert, right?” I asked as we stood and paid.
“Yep! Why?”
“There’s a bakery nearby that I think you’ll enjoy,” I told her, leading the way. Being with Nikki was defiantly interesting, if not dangerous sometimes. Hopefully she would be in town for awhile longer; we had a lot of catching up to do.
