Chapter 1: David learns
The sun shone through the window of the classroom. All of the students were sitting at their desks, and the teacher was up the front. There was a loud yawn, and everyone turned to look at who it was. The teacher was blathering on about something, but judging by the expressions of the students that actually were listening, it really wasn’t worth paying attention to. David was sitting at a desk, with his face in his hands. He yawned again. He looked up at the clock and sighed. Still only half an hour left! He thought.
There was a sudden rapping noise, and David looked up hurriedly, muttering something about losing his train of thought. The teacher was holding a ruler in one hand and a handful of sheets in the other. “I am now handing these permission sheets out. Please remember to return them tomorrow for our excursion to Heidrich Castle.”

The class murmured a response, then, when no one got up to get them, the teacher frowned and started handing them out. David just sighed and put his check in his hand again. A few minutes later, his daydreams were interrupted by someone whacking him in the head. He looked up, disgruntled, only to see the teacher standing over him. She nodded her head, and walked back to the front of the class.
While rubbing his head with one hand, he held up the notice with the other and read it. It was just a plain information sheet with a tearaway permission slip down the bottom. He was about to put it down – it didn’t look interesting – when a word on the page caught his eye. He heard gasps around the room, and he guessed that everyone else had seen it at the same time he did. He was then sure that everyone in the class would be attending this excursion.
After all, dragons were supposed to be extinct.
