Tales of Starlight's Beginnings

“…….and that is why the starlight princess is considered the last hope of this world….Rai? Rai? Rai are you paying attention at all?” Helios asked.

Rai continued to stare out the window blankly. Helios’s finger tightened around the wooden desk he was sitting at as he fought offthe sudden urge to throw his book square at Rai’s head. Helios waited till the room was completely engulfed in sinlence, and then with one swift motion, Helios put his hands together and the window glass that Rai had been looking out of shattered.

In an instant, Rai fell out of his chair and onto the floor breathing hard. An eruption of laughter echoed through the classroom but was instantly silenced by an icy look from Helios. Helios glared at Rai who had become the class clown since the beginning of that year. Rai who was avoiding Helios’s gaze at all costs looked around and shook his head a bit.

“Sorry….ahahah I guess….” Rai started.

“No excuses,” Helios answered sharply. “Repeat everything we talked about in class. If you can’t, I’ll have your mother see to it that you never see the light of day ever again.”

Rai stood there somewhat stunned and struck with the sudden fear that he would indeed never see the light of day ever again…..He tried to smile a bit but it formed into a grimace on his face.

“Well?” Helios demanded calmly tapping his fingers on the edge of his desk.

“Well….um…..starlight…ya starlight,” Rai answered. “Starlight shows that the starlight princess is still alive and uh…..”

Helios put his hand to his forehead and let out an irritated sigh. “Aurora, please explain to Rai what we were discussing in class.”

Rai watched as Aurora turned around to face him. She had short light blue hair and sharp deep green eyes that contrasted with the rest of her features. Rai tried to smile, but Aurora looked at him tiredly.

“We were learning about the starlight princess,” Aurora smiled lightly. “The starlight princess is an angel who created the stars. She was also the last remaining daughter of Mana the god of everything in this world. The starlight princes came to this world after the losses of her siblings and mother, and she became the sole hope for the people. Because the starlight, people were able to hope…to dream……because it was a symbol to them…..that they were safe……”

“But then the starlight princess vanished one day…..and the starlight along with her….. And the people suffered in a way they could never have anticipated. While living in this world, Angelis, and with the starlight princess by their side, the people had become infatuated with starlight. They became dependent on it. Their entire being….heart…body…and soul…. became attached to the stars. This is called the Starlight effect……and when the stars were taken away……”

“People’s souls began to crumble, yes,” Helios answered. “And without souls, the bodies died in droves. But you also forget, dear Aurora, it was not only peopling who suffered. Plants, animals, even Angelis as a whole suffered from the lack of starlight. The spirituality of starlight had been written so far into our word that it because an essential nutrient per say……and with it taken away, everything started dying.”

“But then…..a hero came!” Aurora said quickly. “His name was Angelis, the name of our world encased into a material form. And he found the starlight princess again! She had been taken captive by an evil king who wanted her for his own…..and Angelis vanquished the king and rescued the princess! And with that they came together Angelis and the starlight princess and started fixing the world again!”

The room had been consumed by the heat of Aurora’s tale.

“But in the end,” Helios answered. “Angelis was mortal and died. And with the death of Angelis……the starlight princess vanished again….and our world…..Angelis……is now dying again. And this leads us to the next chapter of this tale, children….”

“The Starlight Savior!” Haelena unexpectedly shouted. The rest of the room turned to consider this expression of emotion. Haelena was not one to talk very often nor was she the type to get mixed in what she called ‘fairy tales’ but this sudden shout proved to the rest of this room that she had been captivated by Aurora’s words as well.

“Yes, yes, the starlight savior,” Helios said wryly. “But it has yet to be confirmed that there even exists such a thing anymore. The past has been written….the future hasn’t……but we can always take a few guesses…..It is said that the Starlight Savior will come wearing angelic wings bearing the starlight insignia.”

“But no one has shown up like that,” Rai said quickly.

“True, true,” Helios smiled. “But whe-…………”

A knock echoed off the wood of the door signaling an entrance.

“Come in…” Helios commanded calmly.

Two very obscure forms appeared through the door, but as they drew closer inwards, they began to look human. The first, Rai recognized was the mayor. The second was black haired man with a sword at his side.

“Sorry to interrupt Helios,” the mayor started. “But there is a matter regarding Rai that must be addressed at this point in time.”
