Alaskan Wilderness

Lolz, it's been months since my trip to Alaska. And months since I've written this entry, but I guess I'm just not very good with posting things when I can/should...and thanks to all my subscribers, I was very surprised when nobody unsubscribed despite my hiatus.

Alaska in the summer is 50 degrees. That's 50 degrees colder than where I come from.

Tools: .5 and .7 lead pencils, Pink Pearl eraser, sketchbook, a horrible horrible scanner, and a little bit of Photoshop cuz the scanner was just so damn bad.

Time: Anywhere from 5-15 minutes for each one, it all depended on how the ship was moving and how much time I had before the view was completely lost.

Reason: Because drawing something helps you remember it better. Also, I didn't have a camera.

Those are the better sketches I drew while on a cruise to and from Alaska. And guess where I drew them: on the top deck, where the view was better. And the wind was stronger. And the rain fell harder. You get the point.

But really, despite all my complaining, I could totally see myself living there. It might be cold and rainy, but I like cold and rainy. And the view is great. Growing up on the outskirts of the city, I never had the chance to truly appreciate nature without a highway less than a mile away. Of course, being a city girl means that I've seen schools larger than the residential area of Skagway. And now that I think about it, having endless rows of stores that sell nothing but jewelry, salmon, and souvenirs might be a bit inconvenient. Hm. Maybe I'll move to Juneau when it builds a way out of the city that doesn't involve an airplane or a boat.

Bleh, I'm getting off-topic. While sketching the mountains, I figured out some new techniques I hadn't known before. It's kinda hard to describe...I guess I learned how to look at mountains? And I figured out how to distinguish the ocean from the mountains as well. Not a mean feat considering I only had a #2 lead pencil. But the only way to properly capture the scene would have been with oil paint.

If anyone knows a good way to draw still water with a pencil, please enlighten me. T_T
