Synopsis
Il y a plus de trois cents ans, une force maléfique s'éveilla en de sombres et mystérieuses circonstances. Lorsque des villages entiers se mirent à tomber au passage d'un terrible « vent de mort », la prêtresse du village qui avait assisté à l'avènement de l'énigmatique mal rassembla autour d'elle un groupe de jeunes femmes et de jeunes hommes purs et courageux qui se donnèrent pour mission d'en libérer les Terres. Cependant, lorsque arriva le jour fatidique qui marqua le dernier affrontement opposant les Chasseurs aux démons invisibles et sans corps qu'ils s'étaient juré de vaincre, d'obscurs événements menèrent à la fin tragique du groupe de jeunes gens, qui avant de mourir parvinrent dans un ultime effort à emprisonner les créatures à l'intérieur d'objets sacrés, où ces dernières devaient sommeiller durant trois cents ans… Alors, des Héritiers seraient révélés afin de poursuivre la mission inachevée des premiers Chasseurs et tenter de délivrer à jamais les Terres du mal dévorant porté par les démons que les anciens appelaient les Kageboushi.
Tome 1 : Les Héritiers des Shodai
Après que le village qu'elle habitait ait succombé au passage d'un terrible « vent de mort », Akina est envoyée sur la route de Kagemura, un village isolé du nord des Terres dont l'existence même lui était jusque alors demeurée inconnue. En chemin, elle s'arrête à Akasawa, où on lui raconte une sombre légende, une histoire dont seuls quelques vieillards gardent encore la mémoire. Cependant, pour la jeune femme, cette légende est bien plus qu'une vieille histoire oubliée : son destin en est profondément marqué…
Arrivée à Kagemura, Akina rencontre d'autres jeunes gens dont les destinées sont, tout comme la sienne, liées à un groupe de démons que l'on nomme les Kageboushi et dont le seul nom suffit à faire frémir d'horreur ceux qui le prononcent. Guidés par la vieille prêtresse du village, la jeune femme et ses nouveaux compagnons devront se préparer à mener à bien une mission entreprise trois cents ans auparavant par un groupe de jeunes hommes et femmes que l'on appelle les Shodai : combattre les démons libérés de leur sommeil pour que plus jamais ils ne puissent revenir hanter les Terres.

The story is a very heavily animanga-inspired novel. It is a fantasy that mixes elements of drama, horror, quest as well as a bit of romance. It is set in an imaginary land that is nonetheless reminescent of ancient peasant Japan.
300 years prior to the beginning of the story, demons had come haunting the land. They were invisible, immaterial creatures that would go from village to village like some deadly wind bringing death and suffering wherever it went.
There used to be a priestess in those times serving the temple of a village isolated from the rest by the mountains. She was said to be very beautiful and her soul very pure... but when the demons were born inside this village and the priestess disappeared, the villagers started suspecting her to have been guilty of some sin that would have awaken them.
Therefore, when the demons started destroying entire villages, the new priestess of this hidden village gathered around her a group of young people, chosen for the power and purity that she felt in their souls, and together they vowed to free their land from the creatures' menace.
Unfortunately, when the demons and the young saviors met in what would become their last battle, tragic events happened that prevented the group of chosen ones from destroying the creatures. They died after having managed only to imprison the demons inside sacred objects that were thereafter safely kept inside three different temples across the land... but from which the priestess who had guided the young saviors was said to have prophesied they shall awaken when 300 years would have passed.
This is where the story begins. The prophecy had been right. The demons have started freeing themselves from their cages and villages are destroyed once again.
The first chapter begins after the village of a young woman named Akina has been attacked. A young man is dying, and before he does tells her she must journey to the hidden village of Kagemura. Akina has never even heard of the village before, but being the only survivor of her village after the attack, she leaves all the same.
When she reaches Kagemura, she meets its priestess and a group of young people who have already been revealed to the old lady as heirs of the first group of saviors and of the mission that they never fulfilled. Akina will join them, but very little knowledge has been kept through the 3 centuries that have passed since the awakening of the demons, the Kageboushi, and the battle of the first saviors, the Shodai.
The legacy of the Shodai is much more an end than the means required to reach it, so a race against time starts for their heirs as they strive to find out how to destroy the creatures as more and more villages fall victim of their evil designs.
